THE Spring Bank Holiday Monday in the United Kingdom always plays host to the traditional sights and sounds of the many country fayre’s held across the green and pleasant land of the British Isles. In Leicestershire the county hosts two popular country fayre’s that also feature annual cross-country races at the picturesque venues of the Oaks-in-Charnwood and in the village of Arnesby. The Oaks-in-Charnwood event staged over what is arguably the toughest multi-terrain race on the county racing calendar – a challenging 6.5 mile two-lap course surrounding Iveshead - witnessed Tim Hartley representing Barrow Runners complete a fine solo victory finishing well over two-minutes clear of the field. Following Jason Williams (OWLS) early lead, Hartley, the 42-year-old former British Masters cross-country champion pulled clear of the field securing victory in a time of 40mins 24secs. Williams finished runner-up in 42:34 with Tim Doran (AFD), as with Hartley part of the Leicestershire team that competed in the Inter-Counties Fell Championships in Llangynhafal last month taking third. Report by Mark Woolley.Full results: www.shepshedrc.org.ukArnesby May Fayre Cross Country Races There were repeat victories for both Fleckney & Kibworth's Stacey Voss and Wigston Phoenix's Sam Winters as both athletes successfully defended their 2009 crowns with victories in the 10th running of this traditional cross-country event. The star turn, however, was produced by 14-year-old Fleckney & Kibworth youngster Jack Williams who smashed the course record on his way to a time of 14:37 over the one and three quarter mile trip which like the five mile senior test is punctuated with an array of stile crossings to add to the undulating terrain. This was the latest in a series of unbeaten performances by Williams whose recent time of 2:12 over 800 metres in the first round of this year’s Aviva ESAA Cup was on a par with top ten times on the East Midlands Power of Ten rankings despite the schools competition not being officially recognised for the purposes of UK Athletics performance data." Inter-Counties Championships)Llangynhafal, DenbighshireSaturday 22nd May 2010MARTIN Cox produced a stellar performance in searing heat to win the Inter-Counties Fell Running title representing Leicestershire & Rutland over a very tough and demanding course over the Clwydian hills surrounding the welsh village of Llangynhafal. In temperatures hitting a high of 27 degrees in North Wales, Cox, the 40-year-old Enderby-born Salford Harrier, winner of the England Athletics V40 title at the recent Bristol 10km led home the field of over 200 runners with a fine solo performance clocking a time of 1hr 11mins 34secs to finish well over a minute clear of runner-up Simon Bailey (Mercia) 1:12.53. Switching from road to fell is certainly no problem for Cox having won the Racchettinvalle snowshoeing race in Pragelato, Italy earlier this year. In the team competition City of Leeds athlete Adam Osborne spearheaded Yorkshire to the men’s title as the Leicestershire team managed by John Brown finished in 11th place overall with Tim Hartley (Notts) finishing in 52nd place overall in 1:29.25 followed by Tim Doran (AFD) having lowered his personal best at last months Virgin London Marathon securing 88th in 1:37.48 completing the counting runners. Peter Swaine (Charnwood) finished 108th in 1:42.21. In the women’s race Bingley Harrier Victoria Wilkinson won the individual title in a time of 1:25.33 as Yorkshire completed the championship team double. Beaumont’s mountain-running international Sula Young finished in fourth place in 1:27.34 representing Scotland East. Steel was followed home by the British Masters international duo of Nicki Nealon (Huncote) in 38:42 and Nicki Thompson (Charnwood) 42:51. Joseph Ebuya crossed the line in the men’s senior 12km race in a time of exactly 33 minutes to give Kenya their ninth medal in the history of the the event. Eritrea's Teklemariam Medhin finished six seconds adrift in second, whilst, Moses Ndiema Kipsiro of Uganda took the bronze at the Myslecinek Park in Bydgoszcz. With six-time winner Kenenisa Bekele of Ethiopia absent due to injury, the men's race was wide open. However, defending champion Gebre-gziabher Gebremariam of Ethiopia was a disappointing 10th, over 35 seconds behind Ebuya. Great Britain’s Mo Farah finished just outside the top 20 in 21st place, just over one minute behind Ebuya - with team-mates Andrew Vernon and Michael Skinner 44th and 79th respectively. Kenya's Emily Chebet won the senior women's 8km race in a time of 24 minutes 19 seconds ahead of compatriot Linet Chepkwemoi Masai and Ethiopia's Meselech Melkamu. Three-time European junior champion Steph Twell was the top British finisher in 23rd place with compatriots Faye Fullerton (33rd), Freya Murray (37th) and Loughborough student Stevie Stockton (47th). Hayley Yelling, the European champion, finished down in 63rd. Caleb Mwangangi Ndiku won the men's junior race and Mercy Cherono captured the women's junior title as Kenya swept the podium in both events adding to the disappointing day for Ethiopia. Sheffield’s Hatti Dean led the way in the senior women’s race as the 28-year-old former UK steeplechase record-holder completed an eighteen second victory over England compatriot Hannah Whitmore clocking a time of 25mins 09secs despite the very windy conditions with Emma Pallent (South) securing third in 25:43. Loughborough University student Natalie Gray (25:48) and Midlands cross-country champion Gemma Steel (26:03) completed the scoring athletes for Team England finishing in fourth and fifth places respectively. Charnwood’s Tara Krzywicki representing the Midlands claimed a top ten finish in 7th place. Bruce Raeside claimed a fine individual victory for Scotland in a highly competitive men’s senior event when England’s James Walsh having led for the majority of the race was surpassed by Raeside with around 150 metres of the race remaining pulling clear to take the win by a margin of just three seconds crossing the line in time of 31:51. Walsh finished runner-up with Tom Russell of Scotland completing the podium places edging ahead of England's Darren Deed. ![]() Saturday 13th March 2010FREYA Murray has won the McCain UK Cross Challenge senior women’s title to secure her place for Team GB at the IAAF World Championships that take place in Bydgoszcz, Poland, later this month following a terrific performance to defeat the defending champion Steph Twell. With the event moved from it’s traditional home of Nottingham to the surroundings of Birmingham’s Cofton Park, Steph Twell, the winner of the English national and British universities titles last month, and in the absence of European cross-country champion Hayley Yelling-Higham, came into the race as the red hot favourite to defend her crown from last year and complete the domestic hat-rick. The three-time European junior cross-country champion and world junior 1500m champion began over the 8,000m three-lap course by running in the pack in the early stages with Hatti Dean and Julie Briscoe taking on the pace for Yorkshire with Freya Murray of Scotland East for company as the large field snaked their way over the undulating course. Loughborough University were well represented in the leading group with Laura Kenney (Warwickshire) and Emily Pidgeon (Gloucestershire) to the fore as Leicestershire’s Hannah Whitmore, a world representative in Amman last year tracked their progress in eighth place. Twell began to make her move at the 3k point edging to the front with Murray and Faye Fullerton (Essex) side-by-side with Whitmore now up to fourth. The leading pack came down to a trio of Twell, Fullerton and Murray by the half-way mark as Twell applied the pressure stretching the field testing the resolve of the other two athletes with Fullerton working hard to stay in contention. As the race entered the final stages Twell and Murray pulled clear with the Scot looking very strong and fresh, full of running under the challenge of Twell despite the windy conditions aware of her opponents track speed approaching one kilometre to go. Murray taking no chances made her move to break clear with a determined sprint leaving Twell with nothing left in response as the 26-year-old Chester-le-Street athlete powered home by over 30 metres taking a fine victory and the UK Challenge title in a time of 27mins 21secs. Murray commented afterwards: “I’m delighted and over the moon with my race today, top three was my aim today I knew it was going to be a tough race, I’ve changed my coach to Steve Jones this year and training has gone well.” Twell finished second in with 27:30 ahead of Fullerton (27:41) and an excellent run for Hannah Whitmore (27:47) holding off Emily Pidgeon for fourth place. Report by Mark Woolley.Leading Results: ![]() Saturday 13th March 2010MO FARAH gave a virtuosos and high quality performance to race away from his domestic rivals securing the UK Challenge final victory and confirming his place for the Great Britain team ahead of the Bydgoszcz World Cross Country Championships in Poland later this month. Over the 12km Cofton Park four-lap course Farah lined-up alongside defending champion and national cross-country and British universities title winner Andy Vernon (Hampshire) in a very big field at the start. Farah, the European cross-country silver medallist in Dublin came into the race following a warm weather training spell in South Africa and decided to sit back in deep in the pack in the early stages as Tom Humphreys took on the mantle from the front with Moumin Geele as with Farah running as wild card entrant rather than the Inter-Counties in second. This set out the pattern of the race over the majority of the opening kilometres as Farah eased through to join the leaders, the European 3,000m indoor champion having preferred to concentrate on the country this season with the World Championships in Poland his target rather than compete for Team GB in Doha, took the lead on the down hill section at 3km with training partner Geele and Mike Skinner for company. Vernon, having stayed in the pack then took his turn to push the pace at the front with Farah tracking closely as with 7km to go a group of three broke clear comprising of Farah, Geele and Vernon. From that point Farah’s class began to show through as the 26-year-old applied the pressure to push the pace placing daylight between Geele and Vernon as the Newham & Essex athlete was simply in a class of his own. Leaving the rest of the field in his wake Farah, throwing away his hat increased the lead to an unassailable 60 metre gap at 5km with Vernon and Geele struggling to keep pace. Racing in the stunning new bright blue and yellow 2010 corporate adidas racing strip Farah looking full of running, confident and showing the amount of effort put in during his trip to South Africa increased his lead with every kilometre despite the strong winds swirling around Cofton Park. Entering the final finish straight Farah came home well over a minute ahead of the field in a time of with one of the most impressive victories of the day sprinting home with a world class performance clocking a time of 34mins 42secs. Vernon secured second in 35:26 as Moumin Geele, runner-up in the nationals, with British citizenship due to be confirmed shortly, claimed third in 35:41 completing the podium places. A delighted Farah commented afterwards: “Really happy how the race went, I’m not happy about how this year has gone after winning the European indoors last year, “My plan was to sit there then go, go, out hard and the crowd made this with the noise, I’m defiantly back to my best I have to work hard having been in Kenya I’m in good shape, I’m looking to improve on tenth place at the worlds in Poland.” Report by Mark Woolley.Leading Results: ![]() Tuesday 2nd March 2010CHARNWOOD AC’s highly successful senior women’s squad defended their team title in style at the Saucony English National Cross Country Championships, whilst, the next generation of county talent also secured bronze in the Boys Under-13 race.
