CHARNWOOD AC have successfully defended their title at the 2009 Saucony Midland AAA Six-Stage Relays Championships held at Birmingham’s Sutton Park with a stellar performance as British international Tara Krzywicki anchored home the team to victory ahead of West Country rivals Bristol & West and third placed Coventry Godiva Harriers replicating the same podium 1-2-3 finish for the second consecutive year.
The Loughborough-based team – once again underlining their position as Leicestershire’s most successful road-running club in the sports history - competing in Birmingham with a squad containing a mixture of youth and as team manager Sarah Whitmore shuffled the pack as two top senior athletes were unavailable for selection as World Cross Country Championships representatives Juliet Potter and Hannah Whitmore were rested after their excursions in the Jordanian capital Amman the previous weekend on international duty for Great Britain.
However, the current Charnwood deck of cards is very impressive and stacked high with plenty of Ace cards to select as Loughborough University student Kate Lomas ably stepped up to the mark where the green and gold vests were a class apart in Birmingham led by the experience and class of the inform Juliet Doyle and Tara Krzywicki.
Lomas, one of the few Loughborough students in action at Birmingham with the vast majority of their squads away warm-weather training in the USA and South Africa, led off for Charnwood on the opening stage clocking a time of 17:34 to hand over to Sarah Maude with Charnwood in seventh place overall as Debbie Walters (16:32) gave Birchfield Harriers the early lead.
Loughborough graduate Sarah Maude ran a fine leg of 16:45 to lift Charnwood into the silver medal position as Joanna Emery (17:37) moved Coventry up to first place, however, from that point forward there was only going to be one winner as Juliet Doyle, winner of the recent Silverstone Half Marathon, clocked an outstanding leg of 16:12, the fastest overall stage of the day, to hand the lead over to Midlands Masters cross-country champion Clare McKittrick.
The vastly experienced 36-year-old kept up the pace with a time of 17:44 to maintain Charnwood’s advantage as the impressive emerging talent of Gemma Steel lined-up on the penultimate leg where the 23-year-old Leicestershire cross-country champion clocked 17:38 to pass the mantle over to Tara Krzywicki on the anchor leg.
Krzywicki missed the event last year due to foot surgery but over recent weeks the 35-year-old former UK 3,000m steeplechase record-holder has been in sparkling form making an immediate impact at veteran level on her debut last month by storming to the British Masters cross-country title in Ruthin; and the Yorkshire-born athlete duly produced a fine confident performance showing her road-running class to record the second fastest overall leg of 16:28 leading Charnwood to a commanding victory in a combined time of 1hr 42mins 21secs.
A delighted team manager Sarah Whitmore commented: “It was a really convincing result so we were all very pleased especially as we were missing Jane and Hannah. However, we will be missing Katie Lomas for the Nationals as she will be away warm weather training.”
This fine performance adds a further trophy to the huge mantle-piece at Charnwood’s club house with the national four-stage road and cross-country relay championship titles already secured for the 2008/09 winter season the Loughborough club will now look to complete a clean sweep of victories at the national six-stage event at the same Birmingham venue later in the month where they will face tough opposition from Aldershot, Farnham & District led by three-time junior European cross-country champion Steph Twell.
Bristol & West despite missing Beijing Olympian Kate Reed and Loughborough graduate Amy Chalk from their squad claimed the silver medals in 1:45.15 with current Loughborough student Susie Richards, returning following a year competing on the NCAA circuit for Butler University in the US, running on their fourth leg as Coventry Godiva Harriers finished third to complete the podium places in 1:45.39.
The Charnwood ‘B’ squad also secured a top ten finish overall as British Masters international Nicola Thompson (19:46) combined with Amber Magee (18:52), Birmingham University student Clare Mensley (18:27), Clare Tomaney (19:15), Heather North (21:56) and Angela McWilliam (20:31) to clock a combined time of 1:58.47.
Also in action at Birmingham in the area championships were Fleckney & Kibworth Running Club – one of the newest athletics clubs established in Leicestershire - and they certainly did not disappoint gaining a very impressive top twenty finish up against the very best in the Midlands region as Kate Dormer with their fastest individual leg of 20:05 combined with Lorna Waters (20:57), Tina McDonagh (22:24), Bernadette Owen (22:24), Claire Beach (21:10) and Rachael Campbell (20:16) to finish in 17th place overall with a time of 2:07.16.
Harborough AC were the only other women's Leicestershire club in action at Sutton Park, led by Karen Brooks (20:11), Katy Kenyon (21:39), Traci Edwards (26:27), Unity Hamilton (22:36), Lynette Lewington (24:34) and Maria Kilby (25:09) they finished in 30th place with a time of 2:20.36.
Birmingham-based club Tipton Harriers completed a fine victory to collect the Men’s 12-Stage title as the team spearheaded by British international and World Cross Country representative last week in Jordan, Phil Nicholls and which included Leicestershire’s Nigel Stirk on the fourth leg clocked a combined time of 3:51.55 to finish ahead of Coventry Godiva Harriers (3:53.07) and the defending champions Notts AC (3:53.07).
The Leicester OWLS produced a spirited performance with a team as with Charnwood in the women’s event contained a mixture of youth and experience to finish in sixth place overall replicating their position of twelve months ago this after having led the race for the opening four stages where Paul Miles set them on their way with a 26:44 clocking on the opening first long-leg.
Miles was followed by Gaz Davies (14:52), Tom Mahon (15:16), Mark Powell (27:37), Chris O’Neill (15:59), James Franklin (16:12), Jason Williams (29:00), Tom Meakin (15:59), Simon May (19:04), Eddie Highton (28:21), Neil Carter (17:00) and Josh Norman (16:13) as the Wigston-based club finished with a combined time of 4:02.17.
Charnwood finished in 20th place overall with their team of Glen North (31:30), Andy Lomas (18:11), Tom Whitmore (18:14), Mark Couldwell (28:11), Mark Whitmore (19:26), Nigel Scoggins (18:51), Richard Brown (31:43), Duncan Dickie (20:10), Paul Harmer (17:13), Michael Brind (31:41), Steve Mears (16:00) and Kevin Pye (18:11) clocked a time of 4:29.21.
Harborough AC completed the Leicestershire teams in action as they finished in 27th place overall with a time of 4:34.22 with their squad of Sean Fenwick (30:10), Matthew Green (17:54), Daniel Worley (17:12), Jason pitcher (31:53), Adam Brooks (18:41), Tony Harrison (20:01), William Clapp (30:46), Stan Costall (18:10), Hugh Delargy (19:05), Martin Gore (32:23), Howard Crabtree (19:50) and Richard Bufton (18:17).

KENYAN international athletes Kiplimo Kimutai and Joyce Kandie showed their class to dominate the 27th edition of the Sweatshop Reading Half Marathon as the duo claimed fine individual victories ahead of a huge field of almost 12,000 runners over the challenging course surrounding the Berkshire town in this traditional high profile pre-London event.
In the bright sunny and dry conditions Kiplimo Kimutai continued his recent run of good form on the United Kingdom’s roads having won over the 13.1 mile distance in Hastings earlier in the month the 25-year-old crossed the finish line inside the Madejski Stadium, home of Reading FC, in a time of 1hr 02mins 46secs to take the title ahead of Britain’s Phil Wicks (Belgrave) by a margin of just five seconds following a closely fought race, whilst, compatriot Joyce Kandie outpaced Loughborough University graduate Louise Damen (Winchester) to win the women’s title in 1:12.49.
Wicks, the 2007 AAA half-marathon champion and Team GB representative at the 2008 European Cross Country Championships smashed his previous life time best over the distance of 1:04.43 set in Bristol in 2007 by a significant margin following his strong performance. Windsor’s Benedict Whitby claimed third place in 1:03.43.
For Louise Damen, a World Cross Country Championships representative for Team GB in 2004 and winner of the event two-years ago, here racing in preparation for her debut over the marathon distance in London next month the 26-year-old looked to be in good form clocking 1:13.59 to take second place ahead of Susie Bush (Aldershot, Farnham & District) and fourth placed Holly Rush (Bath AC).
Also in the men’s event the 2008 Leicestershire road-running champion Alistair Watson representing Hermitage Harriers ran a fine race to finish in 47th place setting a new lifetime best of 1:13.29, as fellow county athlete Tim Doran clocked 1:13.50 on his debut in the colours of the Hampshire club Aldershot, Farnham & District AC to secure 52nd place as the Surrey-based athlete, coached by Phil Banning, also looks ahead to the capital’s big event on Sunday 26th April.
IF there are any athletes who are looking for a warm-weather training base in Morocco for the 2008/09 winter season there is a beautifully maintained house available for rent in the town of Ifrane, a ski-resort set in the Atlas Mountains of Morocco that is situated 1650 metres in altitude and is part of the Meknes-Tafilalet region.
Located just two-hundred metres from the town centre - the house, that comprises of a two bedroom property that sleeps up to four and will costs £150 per week to rent.
The house is owned by Ian Chapman, who originally bought the house for his Moroccan-born wife but has since relocated back to the East Midlands.
One of the perks of the property is that the house is quipped with a huge library of over 200 running documentary’s and films featuring many of the greatest athletes in history, in fact Ian’s three-year-old son is named Sebastian - so after a long day’s training you can relax and immerse yourself in the history of the sport.
The above photo shows the fantastic views from the house across the town to the mountains beyond.
LEICESTER marathon champion Diana Lobachevske returned to the county roads to take an impressive and comprehensive victory at the ALDI Ashby 20 mile race smashing the 2006 course record set by Nicola Clay over the route that was revamped back in 2003.
In the popular traditional pre-London build-up race, Lobachevske, the 28-year-old Lithuania-born athlete - winner of the 2008 Vilniaus Marathon back in her home city in August where she set a course record of 2:45.31 – was simply a class apart over the challenging rural single-lap course surrounding Ashby-de-la-Zouch in North West Leicestershire clocking a time of 2hrs 02mins 40secs to lead home the huge field of 828 runners finishing almost ten minutes ahead of runner-up Jane Preen of Milton Keynes (2:13.03) and third placed Coventry Godiva Harrier Helen Taranowski (2:14.46).
Jenni Muston of Shepshed Running Club preparing for next months Flora London Marathon set a fine lifetime best of 2:17.07 to secure 5th place with the OWLS Julie Lamb in sixth with 2:17.36. Birstall’s Lesley Griffin clocked 2:34.57 to win the Vet55 title.
In the Men’s race the inform Nathaniel Williams also completed a fine individual win outpacing Nigel Marley to take victory in a time of 1:52.06.
Williams, the 25-year-old Yorkshireman has been in fine form over recent weeks with victory at the Stamford Striders Valentine 30km race combined with a runners-up spot at the ASICS Watford Half Marathon in February. His winning time, however, was outside of Sale Harrier Gareth Raven’s course-record of 1:44:17 set in 2005.
Marley claimed second place for Rugby & Northampton in 1:52.06 with Stilton’s Chris Southam winning the Vet40 title in third place with 1:55.58.
Also claiming a top-ten finish and proving that sports journalists can actually run was Paul Halford from Athletics-Weekly magazine representing the Peterborough club Werrington Joggers clocking a time of 1:58.39 in 8th place.
CHARNWOOD’s Juliet Doyle claimed one of the most impressive individual victories of her athletics career at the high profile adidas Silverstone Half Marathon that was held at the world famous motor racing circuit in Northamptonshire, organised by the Flora London Marathon team.
Doyle, the 27-year-old British international making full use of the perfect dry conditions on a Spring morning out pacing Birmingham University student Charlotte Penfold (Bournemouth AC) by a huge margin of over five-minutes to take victory in a time of 1hr 17mins 27secs.
Doyle commented: "I wanted to feel good at the end, so I didn't want to take it too fast so I set off at a nice pace and really enjoyed the race, this is only my second marathon, so I am over the moon."
This fine victory follows Tim Hartley’s title victory last year in the men’s race, Doyle’s finishing time, in only her second attempt over the distance, was outside of her personal best of 1:16:47 set way back in 2004 at the Experian Robin Hood Half Marathon when finishing fourth in Nottingham.
Darran Bilton of Leeds AC, runner-up over the distance at last year’s Experian Robin Hood event, won the men’s title in a time 1:07.23, the 43-year-old finished ahead of Shaftesbury Barnet Harrier Tom Bedford (1:09.29) with Loughborough-based British Triathlete Will Clarke, winner of the recent Charnwood Hills Race, securing third in 1:09.56. Beaumont’s Phil Chritchlow claimed a top-ten position in 7th place in 1:12.52.
GEMMA STEEL produced a fine performance to win the third annual staging of the Lighthouse 7 mile race surrounding the picturesque Pitsford Reservoir in Northamptonshire.
In the bright spring like conditions, Steel, the 23-year-old representing Charnwood, the reigning Leicestershire county cross-country champion, returned to road racing following a highly successful season on the country as part of the Loughborough clubs fine double national and relay team title success to take victory over the 7 mile course in a new persoanl best of 39mins 24secs defeating the entire field of both men and women.
The race was originally due to take place on February 15th but was cancelled on Health and Safety reasons taken by Anglian Water who manages and maintains the reservoir, this due to weather conditions.
FIVE weeks ago the heaviest winter snow fall for over 18 years in the United Kingdom cancelled the Ashby fixture of the 2009 LRRL – but as the cold of February was replaced by the bright mild Spring sunshine of March both Tim Hartley and Kate Ramsey shone the brightest as two of Great Britain’s top Masters athletes showed their class to secure fine individual victories for Barrow Runners at the Desford 10km.
British & Irish Masters cross-country champion Tim Hartley returned to action following a bout of flu and a frozen shoulder that resulted in him missing representing Leicestershire at the McCain UK Challenge Inter-Counties meeting at Nottingham the previous weekend to take a fine victory almost a minute ahead of the field in a time of 30mins 54secs outpacing rival Mark Powell (OWLS), the athlete he defeat to claim the Leicestershire county cross-country championship title in the freezing conditions of Melton Mowbray back in January.
Ashley Sabin, club mate of Hartley's at Notts AC, here also representing his second claim team Leicester Coritanians, secured third in 32:45.
Barrow made this a double celebration as Kate Ramsey continued her remarkable and successful winter campaign on the both the county’s roads and cross-country to add the LRRL individual title to the Derby Runner League crown already secured this season - completing a clean-sweep of victories in the series finishing seven-seconds ahead of the Midlands Masters cross-country champion Clare McKitterick (Charnwood) in a time of 36:59.
Fellow British Masters international Nicki Nealon (Huncote) underlined the remarkable depth of talent in the Vets age-group in Leicestershire by taking third place in 38:03.

BRITISH marathon international Neil Renault held off a strong challenge from Forres Harrier Ben Livesey to win the Press & Journal Silver Jubilee Inverness Half Marathon on Sunday 8th March over the course surrounding the Capital City of the Scottish Highlands.
Former Leicestershire resident Renault, representing Medway and Maidstone AC, clocked a time of 1hr 8mins 18secs to finish 13 seconds clear of Livesey, the 2006 winner who had to settle for second position for the third consecutive year finishing just two seconds outside his personal best time set in the same event in 2007.
Renault (25), who is based at Arniston in Midlothian, has a best time over the distance of 1:05.25 set last year in Helsby, and also claimed victory at the recent Renfrewshire five-mile race.
KATE RAMSEY continued her very impressive run of victories in domestic county races over the winter, having secured the overall title in this season’s Derby Runner Cross Country League campaign, the 40-year-old British Masters international representing Barrow Runners completed a fine hat-trick of victories with a dominant performance at the Kibworth 6 as the 2009 Leicestershire Winter Road Running League campaign returned to action following the cancellation of the previous fixture at Ashby two-weeks previous due to the heavy snowfall that affected the United Kingdom.
Ramsey, having won the opening two races at Barrow and Markfield crossed the line in Kibworth to take victory in a time of 36mins 52secs, holding off the strong challenge of Midlands Masters cross-country champion Clare McKittrick by a margin of 14 seconds.
This fine run of form will bodes well for Ramsey and McKittrick as they prepare to represent Team Leicestershire at the McCain UK Cross Challenge Inter-Counties event at Nottingham’s Wollaton Park on Saturday 7th March.
Gemma Smith of Birstall secured third in 38:08 with the vastly experienced World Masters half-marathon champion Nicki Nealon, the 2009 Alliance & Leicester Sportswoman of the Year, returning to racing following minor surgery, taking fourth place (38:21).
In the men's race with Leicestershire’s leading athletes Mark Powell and Tim Hartley absent from the event having competed for the OWLS and Notts AC respectively at the Saucony English National Cross Country Championships in London the previous day, the Leicester half-marathon champion Mark Couldwell racing in the colours of Charnwood AC took his opportunity to shine completing his first individual LRRL victory as the 34-year-old triathlete clocked a time of 32:46 to finish ahead of Harborough’s Sean Fenwick (33:47), with former British international Gareth Deacon taking third for the Coritanians in 34:04.
Karl Beardall out paced Welsh Masters international Rob Sheen to take fourth place in 34:14 for the host club Fleckney & Kibworth. Full Results (Mixed):

TIM DORAN set a superb lifetime best at the
Reading Roadrunners Bramley 20 mile race on Sunday 15th February to continue his impressive build-up on the road to April’s Flora London Marathon.
Over the fast single-lap course surrounding the village of Bramley situated near Basingstoke in Hampshire, Doran, the 29-year-old Surrey-based athlete representing the Leicester Owls clocked a time of 1hr 52mins 13secs following a 10-mile split of 55:48 to finish in third place as John McFarlane (Thames Hare & Hounds), winner of the 2008 Man v Horse Marathon in Llanwrtyd Wells, claimed a fine victory in 1:47.04 ahead of Woodford Green’s Ewen Malloch (1:48.19).
This was the last major road-race for Doran ahead of the Flora London Marathon in what has been an excellent preparation programme for the capital's big event which has seen him improve his personal best over the 10-mile distance at the Fred Hughes race back in January (55:08) combined with solid performances in the Ronhill Surrey Classic 10k Series in the Autumn to clearly underline Doran’s ambition to improve his personal best of 2:36.39 when he toes the line in Greenwich on Sunday 26th April for the world’s biggest marathon.

ASHLEY SABIN and Kate Ramsey claimed fine individual runaway solo victories at the second series of the 2009 Leicestershire Road Running League campaign held over the undulating one-lap rural 10km course surrounding the village of Markfield set on the edge of the beautiful National Forest in Charnwood.
In the Men’s race Sabin, 21, here representing his second claim club Leicester Coritanian AC was in a class of his own ahead of the field of over 500 athletes holding off the challenge of the reigning Leicester half marathon champion Mark Couldwell to take clear victory by a comfortable margin of 39 seconds in a time of 32mins 54secs to significantly improve on his third place achieved in the opening event in Barrow.
Couldwell, on a very busy weekend for the 34-year-old Charnwood triathlete having raced at the Midlands Territorial Cross Country Championships over the tough demanding conditions of Mansfield’s Berry Hill Park the previous day, clocked 33:33 to secure the runners-up position behind Nathaniel Walker of Leicester Triathlon (33:45).
The Women's race was dominated by one athlete as well where Barrow’s vastly experienced Kate Ramsey continued her excellent run of form in Leicestershire league races on both the road and cross country this winter.
The 40-year-old British Masters international having won the vets overall title of the North Midlands League the previous weekend at Nottingham’s Wollaton Park, that despite suffering from tight back muscles going into the race and having also won the opening three Derby Runner League races plus the opening LRRL event in Barrow, was once again the runaway winner here in Markfield out pacing the chasing field by a huge margin of 34 seconds to cross the finish line at the South Charnwood High School in a time of 37:48 following a superb solo effort.
Charnwood’s Clare McKittrick, a week after winning the British Masters cross country title in Birmingham, finished runner-up in 38:22, with Ramsey’s team mate at Barrow and Loughborough University graduate Catherine Draper, runner-up at the Merseyside County Cross Country Championships early in the month, taking third in 38:48.
For the first time in an LRRL race a blind athlete Haseeb Ahmad completed the course, the remarkable 38-year-old from Oadby completed his first half-marathon at the 2008 Leicester Marathon in the City event back in the Autumn with a superb time of 1hr 35mins 51secs, this despite falling twice during the race.
Here in Markfield alongside sight-guide and team mate at Leicester Tri, Chris Sherwood, he clocked a very respectable time of 40:40 to finish in 93rd position overall in the men's race.
TIM DORAN stepped up his preparation for the 2009 Flora London Marathon in fine style by smashing his personal best over the ten-mile distance with a superb performance to finish runner-up at the Fred Hughes Memorial 10 held in the Hertfordshire town of St Albans.
Doran, the 29-year-old Surrey-based athlete representing the Leicester Owls crossed the finish line at the Francis Bacon School in a time of 55mins 08secs to slice a massive 47-seconds off his previous mark of 55:55 set in March of last year in Maidenhead.
James Lawler of Bedford & County, a third placed finisher at the Lisbon International Marathon in Portugal at the beginning of December, claimed race victory with a fine solo run in 51:55.
This fine win coupled with solid performances in the Ronhill Surrey Classic 10k Series underlines Doran’s ambition to improve his personal best of 2:36.39 when he toes the line in Greenwich on Sunday 26th April for the world’s biggest marathon.
LEICESTERSHIRE’s female club athletes were in fine form on New Year's day as both Gemma Steel and Debbie Marsden completed victories over the 10km distance in races held at two of the United Kingdom’s most popular seaside resorts.
Hermitage Harrier Gemma Steel, the reigning Leicestershire road running champion, here representing her second-claim club Charnwood clocked a time of 34mins 50secs to take victory in the Lincolnshire coastal town of Cleethorpes as the 23-year-old finished ahead of home athlete Natalie Farrow (35:57).
In the South West of England, team mate Debbie Marsden was also in early 2009 action winning the Weston AC - Hangover 10km race on the seafront of Weston-super-Mare, as the 31-year-old reigning Leicestershire 10,000m champion having set a new lifetime best over the Christmas holiday at the Claythorpe Millennium Runs 10km (36:53) completed victory in a time of 37:26, securing 8th place over well ahead runner-up Lucy Hamilton of Great Western Runners (39:52).
At the annual Coventry New Year 5 mile held on the campus of Warwick University, Ashley Sabin (Notts AC) led the way for Leicestershire athletics finishing in 5th place overall with a time of 25:32 as Northern Ireland’s Paddy Hamilton (Annadale Striders) claimed victory in 24:44.
Leamington’s Sue Harrison held off the challenge of former United Kingdom 3,000m Steeplechase record-holder Tina Brown to win the women’s race in 27:50 as Barrow’s inform British Masters international Kate Ramsey claimed 5th place in 29:38.
Full results of the races are available on the following links:
TIM DORAN set a fast early pace to claim a fine individual victory in the final Ronhill Surrey Classic 10km road race series at the Horton Country Park, Epsom, on Sunday 21st December.
Doran, the 29-year-old representing the Leicester Owls preparing for next year's Flora London Marathon, having finished second in the opening race at Oxshott on October 26th dictated the pace from the start to claim a dominant victory over the two-lap course by a margin of 80 metres ahead of the field in a time of 34mins 05secs, outside of his personal best of 32:45 set when winning the race twelve months ago.
Herne Hill’s Tim Elsey, who won the two opening races in the series, found having two races in less than 24 hours too great a challenge to complete a hat-trick of wins. However, Elsey, who was second in 34:22, had the consolation of winning the overall men’s title.
Chris McCormick from Elmbridge Road Runners was third in 34:48 and was also the top veteran in the this very popular three-race event now in it's 21st season.
BRITISH international’s Neil Renault and Juliet Doyle made fine use of the excellent conditions over a flat fast course at the Nottinghamshire village of Caythorpe to smash their respective lifetime bests racing to fine individual festive victories and course-records at the 2008 edition of the Millennium Runs On 10k.
In the Men’s race for Neil Renault this current success marked the fourth consecutive victory achieved over the distance by the 25-year-old Leicestershire-based athlete over the autumn/winter season and firmly underlined his return to full fitness and top form following foot surgery in June.
On a cold and frosty clear morning ideal for fast road-running Renault representing Long Eaton completed a well-deserved nine second victory ahead of Derby’s Colin Hawkins - crossing the line at the Caythorpe Cricket Club with a superb new lifetime best of 30mins 04secs comfortably inside his previous mark of 30:12 set at the Merrill & Shelton Striders 10km in October.
Hawkins, winner of the Woodhall Spa 10km back in June claimed second in 30:15 - also a new personal best for the 24-year-old - with British international Stephen Hepples of Newham & Essex Beagles finishing third six-seconds adrift in 30:21.
The outcome of the Women’s race was never in doubt as Juliet Doyle was simply sublime racing to an excellent solo victory.
Having represented Team GB in the 5,000m support race at the recent Chiba Ekiden Relays in Japan, the 27-year-old was in a class of her own storming to victory making good use of the pace set by the men to completely smash her previous personal best out of sight to take the win in a time of 33:27, well over three minutes clear of the Lincolnshire county cross-country champion Harriet Canter.
Doyle’s performance sliced a massive 47 seconds off her previous best of 34:14 set at the Chichester Priory 10km in October and gave her 18th place overall in this high quality event to round off a quite amazing year which has seen her not only get married, but was also part of the successful team that witnessed Charnwood regain the Saucony National Cross Country Relays team title in Mansfield.
Canter finished second in 36:38 with Doyle’s team mate at Charnwood, Debbie Marsden, the reigning Leicestershire champion over the distance on the track, also significantly lowering her own lifetime best with a time of 36:53 to secure third place on a day of record-breaking performances in the race that attracted a field of 634 athletes.
HELEN CLITHEROE comfortably retained her title for the fifth consecutive year at the annual Ribble Valley 10km as the British record-holder for the 3,000m Steeplechase ran solo to take victory in a time of 32mins 32secs.
The 34-year-old Preston Harrier, fresh from gaining team silver for GB at the recent SPAR European Cross Country Championships in Brussels, coached by John Nuttall at Loughborough University - made good use of the perfect conditions on a cold frosty morning over the course surrounding the Lancashire town of Clitheroe completing a comprehensive victory finishing two-and-a-half-minutes ahead of the women’s field led by Loughborough graduates Ruth Senior (Norwich), second in 35:02, and third placed Katie Ingram representing Horwich RMI (35:12).
Clitheroe, having represented Team GB in the Steeplechase at the Beijing Olympics setting a British record of 9:29.14 on the track of the Bird's Nest Stadium in the Chinese capital, missed out on the £150 cash bonus on offer for breaking her own course-record set in 2005 with a mark of 32:20.
HATTI DEAN fresh from winning team silver for Great Britain at last weekend's SPAR European Cross Country Championships in Brussels smashed the course record over the 5,000m at the latest round of the Derby Winter Mid-Week Training Races.
Dean, the 26-year-old former United Kingdom record-holder for the 3,000m Steeplechase representing Hallamshire Harriers, showing no ill effects of her exertions at the Parc de Laeken where she finished eighth overall as Team GB collected silver behind Portugal, clocked a time of 16mins 14secs to comfortable win the women's race and set the new mark for the event.
In the Men's race Heanor's Philip Mitchell out sprinted Dean's club mate at Hallamshire, Dave Archer, to win by a margin of four-seconds in a time of 15:36.
Paul Gregory of Hermitage Harriers and Bournemouth's Lauret Kelly were out on their own in the mile race finishing a very close first and second place overall separated by just one second over the line with times of 4:56 and 4:57 respectively.
Suzanne Roddis representing North Derbyshire Running Club won the women's race in 6:04.

THE 2009 City of Bristol Half Marathon on Sunday 6th September will host the UK trial races for the following month's IAAF World Championships to be staged in Birmingham.
The half-marathon championships will be held on British soil for a third time on Sunday 11th October - the BUPA Great North Run from Newcastle to South Shields having staged the inaugural race in 1992 and Bristol hosting nine years later. The Bristol event will be celebrating the 20th anniversary of its first ever staging back in 1989.
Bristol was chosen for a number of reasons, among these the suitability of the date, the fast course, the reputation for high organisational standards but most notably the leaning towards the importance of the British field and a British prize money list.
Ian Stewart, UK Athletics' newly-appointed national endurance coach said: "The opportunity to compete in a British vest in a World Championship in Britain is a rare privilege and one that does not come along that often.
"Indeed this will be the only opportunity for British athletes to sample that experience before the London 2012 Olympic Games."
The selection criteria for the Great Britain and Northern Ireland team will be announced in due course.
BRITISH marathon international completed another fine individual victory at the Mizuno Bolsover 10km in Derbyshire on Sunday 14th December.
The 25-year-old Leicestershire-based athlete representing Long Eaton Running Club made good use of his recent good form in the mild dry conditions, having made a successful return from foot surgery in the summer to clock a time of 31mins 12secs over the flat fast course following a virtual solo performance finishing 31 seconds ahead of runner-up Chris Cariss of Bingley Harriers.
Clowne Road Runners Andrew Ward finished third in 32:33 with Beaumont’s Phil Chritchlow securing fourth in 33:17.
Rotherham Harrier Jenny Blizzard was first home in the women’s race as the 33-year-old recorded 35:51 to finish clear of Claire Woolis representing Sutton in Ashfield by a margin of 19 seconds (36:10).
6 September 2010 – Split, Croatia - Anyone looking forward to the men’s Pole Vault competition at the beginning of the season would have salivated at the announcement of a ‘Steven Hooker vs Renaud Lavillenie’ line-up.
A sickly child Yuliya Zarudneva used to regularly catch colds and flu viruses, so in an effort to combat the problem her father came up with an interesting solution.
A towering performance by hometown girl Blanka Vlasic provided the heartbeat of an outstanding day two display by Europe as they overhauled their overnight deficit to the Americas to clinch victory in the IAAF Continental Cup.
Even though Yuliya Zarduneva had been preparing in the balmy September sunshine in Split on the Adriatic coast, she still somehow managed to catch a cold.
