TIM Doran finished runner-up over the 50k distance at the Boddington English Ultra Championships in Gloucestershire on Saturday to place himself in line for a possible Team England call-up ahead of the IAU 50km Trophy Final that takes place in Galway, Ireland, in August.
The 31-year-old Leicestershire athlete from the Aldershot, Farnham & District Club following his performance at the Virgin London Marathon back in April when his lowered his personal best over the distance (2:33.42), guiding Aldershot to team silver in the England Athletics Championships, took on the longer 50k distance to finish in second place clocking a time of 3:10.00 as Julian Rendall (Thames Hare and Hounds) won the title in 3:08.49.
TARA Krzywicki (Charnwood) and Chris Southam (Stilton Striders) won the annual Stathern 10km Festival race.
Former British 3,000m steeplechase record-holder Krzywicki returned to road-racing having claimed a top-ten finish at the McCain UK Mountain Running Challenge (inc. European Trials) at the beginning of the month in Keswick to smash the course record as the 36-year-old secured victory finishing in third place overall with a time of 34mins 22secs well ahead of runner-up Lara Kristiansen (40:57).
Chris Southam held off the challenge of Andrew Henderson to prevail in the men's race by a margin of 12 seconds over the line clocking a time of 33:22.
2010 East Midland Road Running Grand Prix Series – Harborough 5
Harborough, Leicestershire
Tuesday 15th June 2010
NICKI Nealon (Huncote Harriers) secured a remarkable tenth East Midland Road Running Grand Prix championship title by successfully retaining her Harborough 5 title on the penultimate leg of the eight-race series.
In the warm dry conditions the 42-year-old British Masters international continued her fine form on the roads this year, having collected the Leicestershire county half-marathon title Nealon secured victory in Harborough crossing the line over the newly designed course in a time of 29mins 37secs finishing over half-a-minute clear of her nearest championship rival Kirsty Gallagher (Wootton RR), second in 30:12 with Eleanor Greenfield (Nuneaton Harriers) third in 30:33.
Nicola Roder (Leicester Triathlon) was fourth in 31:07 ahead of Hannah Eveleigh (Harborough) 32:01.
Nealon's remarkable 10 titles have been achieved over a 12-year period, this having missed the 2001 series due to the birth of her son Christopher and finished third in 2006 behind fellow British internationals Kate Ramsey and Joanne Wilkinson.
Scott Hazell (Coventry Godiva Harriers), winner of the Coventry half-marathon last month produced an impressive runaway victory in the men’s race finishing in 25:44 well ahead of Steve Platts (OWLS) 26:11 with Sean Fenwick (Harborough) third for the host club in 26:21.
GEMMA Steel (Charnwood) produced another excellent performance as the inform England international lowered her lifetime best to take victory at the Long Eaton 5 mile.
Having won the Swithland 10km the previous week, the 24-year-old Midlands cross-country champion crossed the line in a time of 26mins 53secs, this despite going off course slightly to secure victory ahead of Aldershot's Andrea Woodvine (27:38) and third placed Jenni Muston (Charnwood) 30:37.
Steel’s time was just five-seconds outside of clubmate Tara Krzywicki’s course record of 26:48 set last year.
In a tightly contested men’s race Bruce Raeside (Notts AC) held off a strong challenge from Paul Richardson (OWLS) to claim a three-second victory setting a course record time of 23:55.
Marathon specialist Neill Renault (Medway & Maidstone), having finished 14th in the Virgin London Marathon back in April with a personal best of 2:18:29 claimed third in 24:18. Hermitage Harrier Alastair Watson was fourth in 25:39.
LINET Masai of Kenya ran to a commanding victory over compatriot Emily Chebet in the New York Mini 10K in Central Park.
The 10,000 metre world champion finished in a time of 30mins 48secs on her American road racing debut. Her time was 19 seconds off the course record set by Asmae Leghzaoui in 2002 and one of only four sub-31:00 performances in the event's 39 year history.
Chebet crossed the line in 31:13, followed by Werknesh Kidane of Ethiopia in 31:18. Four-time race champion Lornah Kiplagat of the Netherlands, returning to form after an 18-month injury layoff, finished fourth in 31:40 and New Zealand's Kim Smith was fifth in 32:15.
Paula Radcliffe, the three-time New York City Marathon champion and five months pregnant, was just looking to have some fun waving to the cheering crowd and encouraging runners around her in the all-women race. She was smiling more than she usually does approaching the finish line in Central Park.
In the final 25 yards, Radcliffe picked up her 3-year-old daughter, Isla, and ran beside American athlete Kara Goucher who is also pregnant. Goucher is due on the same day in September as Radcliffe, her training partner this past spring. Goucher could run only those final yards because she pulled out of the run with a back injury. Radcliffe finished the race in 44:36.
“It felt really good,” Radcliffe commented. “I was taking in the atmosphere, helping people up the hills, your priorities change, you’re not trying to run fast, you’re trying to enjoy it.”
MARK Powell and Gemma Steel produced strong solo performances to take fine individual victories at the Swithland 10km, the second of this season’s Leicestershire Summer Road Running League campaign.
In the race run over a single lap course, revised and expanded last year from 6 miles to the 10km distance, the event has in recent year’s been blessed with sweltering conditions, however, witnessed monsoon conditions twelve months ago and the weather for the 2010 edition was more favourable to the athletes, but it was still warm and muggy as the athletes lined-up for the start.
Having finished runner-up to Danny Hallam at the opening summer league fixture in Desford over 10k, Mark Powell (Wigston Phoenix) went one better in Swithland with a strong determined performance the 31-year-old Leicestershire county half-marathon champion completed a 24 seconds victory ahead of Alastair Watson (Hermitage) crossing the finish line in a time of 32mins 34secs. The vastly experienced campaigner Phil Makepeace (Coritanians) was third in 33:02.
In the women’s race, two weeks after representing Team England when finishing 7th over 10 miles at the Bern Grand Prix in Switzerland, the warm conditions were no problem for Gemma Steel (Charnwood) – and having watched her go though her paces at Friday morning’s training session at Loughborough University held in sweltering conditions - the 24-year-old looked equally at ease in Swithland producing a dominant solo runaway victory finishing well ahead of the chasing field as the reigning Midlands cross-country champion clocked a time of 34:24. Steel has a personal best of 33:29 set when finishing fourth in the England national championships last month in Bristol.
The inform Nicki Nealon (Huncote) continued her recent run of good form as the British Masters international, having finished runner-up on Friday night at the Notts 10 claimed second place in 38:02, finishing well over a minute clear of Emily Ault (Barrow) 39:10.
MO Farah has broken his own United Kingdom 10,000m road-record at the Bupa London event, retaining his title with a time of 27mins 43secs, seven seconds inside his previous mark set in the same race twelve months ago.
The European 3,000m indoor champion completed victory ahead of Kenya’s Olympic 10,000m bronze medallist Micah Kogo and compatriot Chris Thompson.
Farah and Kogo were in contention from the off before breaking clear of Thompson and Kenyan Gordon Muhugu, who finished fourth, on the back of a 2:45 split between kilometres five and six.
With two kilometres remaining Kogo moved marginally ahead, however, Farah took the lead with 200m to go before pulling clear to secure victory by just five seconds over the line.
Loughborough University graduate Chris Thompson, having clocked the third fastest 10,000m track time by a Briton in California earlier this month, was third in 28:17.
In the women's race, Kenya's Mary Keitany, the world record-holder over 25km, raced to victory setting a new course record and lifetime best of 31:05. Doris Changeywo finished second in 32:15 with Edith Chelimo completing a clean sweep of podium places for Kenya in third (34:30).
JENNI Muston set a lifetime best of 3 hours 44 seconds to win the MBNA Chester Marathon title on Spring Bank Holiday Monday.
The 36-year-old representing Charnwood AC completed solo runaway victory well clear of second placed Helen Burne of Holme Pierrepont (3:14.36), improving significantly on her previous best of 3:08.22 set in London last year.
DANNY Hallam defied scorching temperatures to secure his first major county road victory at the Desford 10km, the latest round of the Leicestershire Summer League campaign.
The 17-year-old reigning Leicestershire U20 county cross-country champion from the OWLS clocked a superb time of 30:32 on his debut over the 10k distance last month in the more favourable conditions in Sheffield - a mark that would place him inside the current top 50 on the UK senior men’s rankings for 2010, and here a stiflingly hot day in Leicestershire Hallam held off the challenge from the experienced Tipton Harrier Mark Powell to secure victory in a time of 32:39.
With race winner from last year Tim Hartley missing the event having represented the county in the Inter-regional Fell Championships in Llangynhafal, Wales, the previous day, Mark Powell, representing second claim club Wigston Phoenix finished runner-up for the second consecutive year nine seconds adrift of Hallam in 32:48, with Paul Miles (OWLS) securing third in 33:10.
British Masters international Nicki Nealon continued her recent run of sparkling good form and race wins, having won the county half-marathon title in Hinckley and won at the East Midlands Grand Prix Bedford 6 and the Great Weston 5 the 42-year-old Huncote Harrier ran virtually solo to win comfortably in a time of 37:58 well ahead of the chasing field.
Emily Ault (Barrow) finished second in 41:04 ahead of the Leicestershire county 2,000m steeplechase champion Amber Sian-Magee (Charnwood) 41:36.
