ALASTAIR Watson and Clare Mensley secured the individual winter league titles in the final fixture of the LRRL campaign at the Markfield 10km on Sunday.
Over a very busy weekend on the athletics calendar with the World Indoor Championships taking place in Doha and the UK Cross Challenge in Birmingham, the domestic leagues in the United Kingdom continued with the latest round of the LRRL taking place in Markfield.
In the men’s race Alastair Watson (Hermitage) produced a remarkable performance given that the 32-year-old represented Leicestershire at the Inter-Counties the previous day over the tough 8km Cofton Park course and showing no ill affects of his excursions 24 hours before completed a 28 second victory ahead of title rival Phil Chritchlow (Beaumont) clocking a time of 33mins 12secs to secure the title by a margin of just three points in the final overall standings.
Gareth Deacon finished in third place for the Leicester Coritanians in 34:02.
In the women’s race Clare Mensley (Charnwood) secured the winter league title ahead of rival, British Masters international Nicki Nealon (Huncote), as the duo continued their battle following a very close run race with Mensley taking a narrow five second victory over the line clocking a time of 37:35 adding the Markfield first place to her win at the previous race in Stilton and two runners-up positions at Ashby and Barrow.
Mensley wins the women’s winter league title on countback having scored the same amount of points (1499) and race wins as Nicola Clay (Stilton) but has competed in all four of this year’s curtailed race series. (Kibworth fixture cancelled due to heavy snow).
Mensley will be looking to continue her fine form next weekend when representing defending champions Charnwood at the Saucony Midland 4 Stage Road Relays in Birmingham.
The 2010 LRRL Summer League begins on Sunday 23rd May with the Desford 10km - the LRRL Livingston Relays take place on Sunday 4th April at the Loughborough University Campus.
MARTIN Williams set the first ever Kilomathon world record by winning the inaugural 26.2km road race, which took place between Nottingham and Derby, in a time of 1hr 26mins.
In what proved to be an extremely tight race from start to finish, the 32 year old from Wolverhampton, who also won the 2009 Edinburgh Marathon while qualifying for the 2010 Commonwealth Games, crossed the finish line just 3 seconds ahead of Christopher Wilson from Paisley with Notts Tim Hartley finishing in third with a time of 1hr 27mins 14secs.
“I am extremely delighted to have won, especially as I was up against some of the UK’s strongest road race competitors. It makes it even more special to know that I am now the Kilomathon world record holder” said Martin.
“It’s very different to running a traditional distance in terms of pace which made it challenging, but I felt great and knew that I had a very good chance of winning. The route was excellent and the organisers have done a fantastic job in making this a truly top class event that will no doubt set the standard for future metric marathon road races.” he added.
Finishing ahead of strong competition, 34 year old Sarah Harris from Long Eaton took the women’s title with an impressive time of 1hr 39mins 19secs, 45 seconds in front of Scotland’s Jennifer Maclean, with Christine Howard from Matlock taking third place in 1hr 42mins 23secs.
LIZ YELLING completed a hat-trick of victories at the adidas Silverstone Half Marathon that attracted a field of 5,750 runners at the home of British motor racing on Sunday (14th March).
The event is the official warm-up race for next month's Virgin London Marathon, to be held on Sunday April 25th. With just six weeks to go to this event in London, the 13.1 miles is run around the world famous F1 circuit is ideal preparation for London.
In only her second appearance since giving birth to her first child last year, Yelling completed the course in an impressive 74:50 which placed her third in the mixed race which was two minutes down on her course record from 2008.
Yelling commented afterward: “I felt really strong today, and had a great run, and a better run than three weeks ago. I can feel my fitness coming back, and I have upped the mileage and looking forward to the London Marathon in April 2011.”
COMMONWEALTH Games bronze medallist Liz Yelling will join a field of 10,000 runners at the home of British motor racing this Sunday in the official warm-up race for next month’s Virgin London Marathon.
The adidas Silverstone Half Marathon on 14th March marks the start of an important year for Silverstone as it resumes its role as the home of the British Formula 1 Grand Prix. But before Jenson Button, Lewis Hamilton and Michael Schumacher perform there this summer, runners from all over the UK will head to the Northamptonshire venue to test their fitness over a 13.1 mile course just six weeks before the 30th London Marathon takes over the capital’s streets on Sunday 25th April.
Yelling holds the women’s course record for the annual race, and the 35-year-old marathon runner returns to the famous racing track this weekend to make only her second appearance since giving birth to her first child last year.
“I am very pleased to be returning to Silverstone because the race has some happy memories for me,” said Yelling, who set the course record of 72 minutes 46 seconds in 2008 before going on to qualify for the Beijing Olympic Games by finishing top Briton at the London Marathon.
“I have won here twice and am proud to hold the course record. I don’t expect to run so fast this year because I am still regaining my fitness but I know it will be a great experience to compete on the Silverstone circuit again with so many fellow runners.”
Among the other notable names who will come under starter’s orders at 12 noon will be British 400m record holder Iwan Thomas, Conservative MP Alistair Burt, TV actress Jo-Emma Larvin, and numerous TV stars such as Emmerdale’s Tony Audenshaw and Nicola Wheeler, and Taggart’s John Michie, all of whom are honing their preparations for the full marathon next month.
Appropriately, a number of British racing drivers will also be running at Silverstone this year, including former British Formula 3 champion Jonny Kane, Sportscar and GT driver Rob Barff, former All-Japan Formula 3 champion Peter Dumbreck, and Le Mans series driver Stuart Hall.
While Silverstone has been a home to motor racing for more than 60 years, its role as a distance running venue is relatively recent, dating back to 2 March 2003 when the first Silverstone half marathon was held.
Swindon athlete Matt O’Dowd made the most of the glorious conditions that year to become the first men’s champion in 65:40, a time beaten only once since, when Tipton’s Matt Smith completed the looping course in 65:23 in 2005. The first women’s winner was Amy Stiles, and Yelling set course records in both 2007 and 2008.
Even on half marathon day, racing tyres aren’t entirely absent from the Silverstone tarmac as elite wheelchair races have been part of the event since 2005. Shaho Qadir won the first three wheelchair races and held the course record until last year when Brian Alldis smashed it by more than seven minutes in 53:15.
Alldis will be defending his title this year alongside Yelling and many of the country’s best club runners who will join the throngs of fun runners and fund raisers as they enjoy a day out at one of the country’s greatest sporting venues while gearing up to play their part in one its greatest sporting events.
GORDON Lee (Coritanians) and Clare Mensley (Charnwood) were the individual winners of the latest round of the LRRL 2010 with quality victories over the challenging Stilton 7 mile course on Sunday (7th March).
With the previous fixture at Kibworth postponed due to heavy snow Loughborough University student Clare Mensley, a squad member of Charnwood’s outstanding women’s national relay champions, having finished runner-up to league leader Nicola Clay (Stilton) at the opening two races finally secured victory in fine style as the 21-year-old completed the win by a margin of thirty seconds crossing the line in Asfordby in a lifetime of 41mins 54secs.
Clay finished runner-up in 42:24 to maintain her advantage in the league standings with British Masters international Nicki Nealon, winner of the Derby Runner Cross Country League campaign, securing third in 42:58.
In the absence of league leader Tim Hartley (Barrow) the men's race also witnessed a virtual gun-to-tape victory as Gordon Lee completed his second consecutive race win clocking a time of 36:50, as with Mensley the 42-year-old completed victory by almost half-a-minute finishing ahead of former champion Alistair Watson (Hermitage) with Phil Chritchlow (Beaumont) third in 38:05. HAILE Gebrselassie completed a hat-trick of Dubai Marathon victories on Friday but the Ethiopian's hopes of setting a new world record were hindered by a bad back.
The world record-holder crossed the finish line in a time of 2:06:09, 14 seconds ahead of Kenya's Chala Dechase Beyene but more than two minutes slower than his Berlin record time.
"I wanted to break the record, but what can I do?" the 36-year-old said afterwards. "It's important to break my record, one day it will happen."
The $2 million event had attracted around 12,000 runners, according to organisers, with a $1 million bonus on offer to anyone breaking Gebrselassie's world record.
"I didn't have a good night last night, my back was not in the right position," Gebrselassie added.
However, he said the problem was minor and he would still be aiming for a marathon gold at the 2012 London Olympics.
In the women's event, Ethiopia's Mamitu Daska Molisa won in a time of 2:24:18, six seconds ahead of compatriot Aberu Kebede Shewaye.
TIM HARTLEY and Nicola Clay were the individual winners of the Ashby 5 mile - the opening round of the 2010 Winter Leicestershire Road Running League campaign.
In the race which last year was cancelled due to snow Tim Hartley made good use of the more favourable weather representing Barrow Runners the 41-year-old British Masters international held off the challenge of Mark Powell (Wigston Phoenix) to take victory in a time of 24mins 57secs, whilst, in the women's race Nicola Clay completed a fine win for Stilton Striders with an excellent solo effort winning in 29:15 ahead of Charnwood's Clare Mensley by a margin of 33 seconds with Leicester TRI’s Nicola Roder securing third in 30:52. DERARTU Tulu of Ethiopia won the 2009 ING New York City Marathon pulling away over the final mile in Central Park to defeat Russian Ludmila Petrova in a time of 2hrs 28mins 52secs.
World record-holder and defending three time champion Paula Radcliffe in her return to competitive racing faded to fourth place in 2:29.27 having lost touch with the lead group at the 22nd mile point as her left leg cramped over the line as France's Christelle Daunay claimed third in 2:29.16.
Meb Keflizghi with a time of 2:09.15 set a new personal best en route to becoming the first American men's winner of the race since 1982 defeating four-time Boston champion Robert Cheruiyot.
Cheruiyot representing Kenya clocked 2:09.56 with two-time world champion Jaouad Gharib of Morocco third in 2:10.25 as the American national half-marathon record-holder Ryan Hall finished fourth in 2:10.36.
2009 IAAF/EDF Energy World Half Marathon Championships
City of Birmingham
Sunday 11th October 2009
PRE-RACE favourites Zersenay Tadese of Eritrea and Mary Keitany representing Kenya lived-up to their pole positions as the duo completed comfortable victories following superb individual performances at the 18th IAAF/EDF Energy World Half Marathon Championships in Birmingham.
Over a damp twisting course in Britain’s second city under grey skies with little wind providing perfect conditions for fast road-running, three-time defending champion Zersenay Tadese came into the race chasing the history books as the former international cyclist, who only took up running in 2002, was bidding for an unprecedented fourth global title over the distance and the 27-year-old duly delivered in Birmingham in impressive style following a perfect tactically executed race.
Tadese ran with the pack until the long up-hill section at 10km where the former world cross-country champion and global 10,000m silver medallist made his intentions clear pulling clear of Kenya’s Bernard Kiprop Kipyego and the impressive American Dathan Ritzenheim to race away coming home to cross the finish line in Centenary Square in a time of 59 minutes and 35 seconds improving his own championship record and claim a remarkable fourth title over the 13.1 mile distance.
Kipyego secured second place in 59:59 out sprinting Ritzenheim by a margin of just one second to ensure that Kenya won the team title for the fourth time in their history.
Ritzenheim, based in the running mecca of Eugene, Oregon, with his superb run became the first American athlete male or female to gain a medal at the World Half Marathon Championships.
Scotland’s former British 3,000m steeplechase record-holder Andrew Lemoncello led the Aviva Team GB home in 26th place as the American-based athlete clocked 1:03.03 as the squad of Mark Miles, 46th (1:04.21), Phil Wicks, 60th (1:05.10), Andi Jones, 63rd (1:05.37) and Gareth Raven, 75th (1:06.51) finished in 14th place overall.
In the women’s race following a very fast opening pace Mary Keitany, the world-leader over the distance in 2009, simply ran away from a leading group dominated by African athletes completing an impressive gun-to-tape victory narrowly missing Lorna Kiplagat’s world best mark as the 27-year-old crossed the finish line in a lifetime best of one hour six minutes 36 seconds improving on her previous the mark set when winning in Lille last month (1:07.00) smashing Great Britain’s Paula Radcliffe’s championship record of 1:06.47 set in Bristol 2001 and better her silver medal position in Udine two-years-ago.
Compatriot Philes Ongori held on for second place with a sprint finish ahead of Ethiopia's Aberu Kebede in 1:07:38 as Kenya easily won the team title clear of their arch rivals Ethiopia with Russia third.
Bristol’s Claire Hallisey was the top British finisher in 25th place, crossing the line in 1:12.14. She was followed by City of Stoke’s Michelle Ross-Cope in 34th place (1:13.50) and the trio of Gemma Miles, 43rd (1:15.19), Alyson Dixon, 44th (1:15.19) and Rebecca Robinson in 45th position (1:16.21) as the Aviva GB squad finished 7th overall in the team championships.

SEAN FENWICK and Louise Gibson completed a superb double victory for county athletes for the second consecutive year at the Leicester Marathon in the City event that attracted a field of over 2,300 runners lining-up for the start in Victoria Park - this despite a fixture clash with the high profile IAAF/EDF Energy World Half Marathon Championships taking place in Birmingham on the same day.
Twelve months ago the Charnwood duo of Mark Couldwell and Gemma Steel completed victories in the Leicester event and that winning run was continued in 2009 as Harborough athlete Sean Fenwick in the men’s marathon secured the biggest victory of his career as the 39-year-old led home the field crossing the line in a time of 2hrs 35mins 38secs, this following a tight race with the OWLS Mark Powell who suffered for the second time over the 26.1 mile distance - having failed to finish the Edinburgh marathon back in May due to the oppressive heat the 30-year-old disappointingly for such a high quality athlete was forced to pull-out sighting exhaustion with 10 kilometres of the race remaining leaving Fenwick away and clear on the road to victory.
With Powell dropping out Herne Hill Harrier Jonathan Stead was also left out on his own to claim second place in 2:38.23 with Yorkshireman Simon Newton representing the Doncaster club Askern Harriers taking third in 2:42.55 and winning the Police National Championships title that was incorporated into the event this year.
Fenwick’s winning time was outside of the course record set by Steve Batson (2:31.32) last year, whilst, in the women’s race the vastly experienced Christine Howard representing Matlock prevailed in 3hrs to also claim the Police Championships title for the Derbyshire force finishing someway short of Diana Lobacevske’s superb course-record of 2:43.29 also set in 2008.
Over the half-marathon distance the OWLS Louise Gibson representing Leicester Police as with Fenwick claimed the biggest win of her career to secure the county half-marathon title with victory in a new lifetime best of 1hr 22mins 46secs ahead of Kirkstall Harrier Gemma Smith (1:23.52) and Sally Baker of Rugby & Northampton (1:24.35).
Wojciech Gajny representing Notts AC won the men’s race in 1:14.40 as the Polish-born athlete improved on his fourth-place finish last year to take victory in a new personal best ahead of Barrow Runners Stuart Spencer (1:14.58) and Nick Marsh of Louth AC (1:15.08).
Spencer’s second place finish gave him the Leicestershire county title as the Coritanians Dave Pearce won the Vets title in sixth place overall with a time of 1:17.16.

Editors comment:
For the third year the Leicester Marathon returned to the city centre following an 18-year sabbatical, having spent the last six of those lost in the wilderness of Leicestershire back water roads, lacking in numbers and prestige.
Organising a road race at local level over 5 miles or 10km etc. is hard enough but to bring a major United Kingdom city to a standstill even on a Sunday morning is a logistical nightmare requiring forward planning and an army of volunteers, marshals and co-ordination with the Police, Ambulance services, local council's etc, etc, the list goes on and on!
The Leicester Marathon has always existed very uneasily in a congested racing calendar facing strong opposition from the established events such as Nottingham’s impressive Robin Hood race and the world’s biggest road race, the BUPA Great North Run in Newcastle, plus with the advent of the low-cost airlines over recent years the ultra glamorous big city marathon destinations of Europe are less than two-hours away tempting the club runner abroad.
This is illustrated perfectly with the Amsterdam Marathon that takes place the following weekend providing the perfect club weekend in a popular European city that takes place over a very fast course consisting of three separate races over the 26-mile, 13.1 mile and 10km race distances and finishes in the surroundings of the Olympic Stadium.
With the evolution in 2006 of the World Marathon Majors Series, two events of which take place here in Europe with London and Berlin, the club runner as with the elite has a wide selection of top big city marathons to choose from, and many now also take the advantage to travel over the Atlantic to the US to run in Boston, Chicago and next month in the grandest of them all, New York, the race that provided the blueprint for Chris Brasher’s imagination to bring the marathon successfully to London back in 1981 where Britain’s world record-holder Paula Radcliffe will be defending her title.
Of course it will always be difficult to raise the level of any race as regard to the big names running in the event, the world elite are professional athletes who earn their living from the sport and require and rightly deserve hefty appearance fees, and who look for the super fast courses such as Chicago, Rotterdam and Berlin to boost their world ranking and gain qualifying times for the major championships - pancake flat routes with smooth roads and wide boulevards that necessitate fast running with no tight bends - lose one second per mile turning corners and your half-a-minute off the world record by the finish!

SAMMY Wanjiru, the reigning Olympic champion collected a $100,000 bonus cheque for breaking the Bank of America Chicago Marathon course-record in a time of two hours five minutes and 41 seconds on Sunday (18th October).
The 22-year-old Kenyan finished clear of Moroccan Abderrahim Goumri who clocked 2:06.04 with compatriot Vincent Kipruto third in 2:06.08 leading home the field of over 45,000 runners.
Russia's Liliya Shobukhova comfortably won the women's title in 2:25.55 ahead of London Marathon champion Irina Mikitenko (2:26.31) whilst, defending champion Lidiya Grigoryeva of Russia had to settle for third in 2:26.47.
The performances of Wanjiru and Mikitenko earned the duo $500,000 each for winning the World Marathon Majors titles for the period 2008-9.
NICOLA Clay held off the challenge from fellow county athlete British international Clare McKittrick to win the Merrill and Shelton Striders Classic 10k run on Sunday (11th October) that attracted a field of around 450 runners.
In perfect conditions for road-running, Clay, representing Stilton Striders crossed the line in Alvaston with a time of 36mins 28secs as the 37-year-old finished ahead of Charnwood’s European Mountain Running Championships team bronze medallist Clare McKittrick (37:00).
Clay commented: "It was great to be the first woman back but my main focus was my time and it's getting there, so I'm happy.
"The course was very enjoyable and the weather was great too, which made it easier."
In the men’s race teenager Ben Norris from Notts AC claimed an impressive runaway victory in a time of 32 minutes as Loughborough University student Chris Rainsford finished second in 32:50.
Mo FARAH and Charlotte Purdue have successfully led Newham and Aldershot to road-relay title victories at the 2009 Nike 6 & 4 Stage National Championships at Birmingham’s Sutton Park.
Former European cross-country champion Mo Farah, warming-up for his debut over the 10 mile distance at next weeks BUPA Great South Run in Portsmouth, clocked the fastest individual time of the day to lead London-based Newham & Essex Beagles to the men’s title, whilst, Charlotte Purdue with fastest stage in the women’s race combined with world junior 1500m champion Steph Twell to guide Aldershot, Farnham & District to a successful defence of their crown as the Midlands champions Charnwood AC finished in 6th place overall.
Farah clocked the penultimate leg in 16mins 33secs as the team of Dave Mitchinson (17:30), Chris MacKay (17:16), Lee Merrien (17:10), Kevin Skinner (17:42) and Moumin Geele (17:03) finished in a combined time of one hour 43 minutes 14 seconds ahead of Belgrave Harriers and third placed Aldershot, Farnham & District.
The Hampshire club, however, for the third consecutive year topped the podium in the women’s race as the team of British internationals Emily Adams (14:39), Steph Twell (14:00), Louise Small (14:37) and the very impressive Charlotte Purdue on the final stage were simply a class apart of the field easing to victory ahead of Chester-le-Street in a time of 57:09.
Scottish international Freya Murray anchored Chester-le-Street to the silver medals as the City of Norwich club with former British 3,000m steeplechase record-holder Barbara Parker and current Loughborough student Rachel Stringer in their squad claimed the final podium place.
Midlands champions Charnwood AC faced a difficult afternoon in the chase for the medals, with Sarah Maude and Jane Potter absent from the team that won the territorial title back in September the pack was shuffled leaving world cross-country representative Hannah Whitmore to head their challenge with the fifth fastest overall individual leg as the Loughborough club finished in 6th place overall with Gemma Steel (14:36), Whitmore (14:20), Katie Lomas (15:53) and European mountain running championships team bronze medallist Claire McKittrick (15:10) completing the team as they finished one second inside the hour mark in 59:59.
Two other county teams in action in Birmingham headed by the Leicester Coritanian men’s Masters team as they finished in 70th place overall in 2:00.26 with Gordon Lee (17:37), Simon Cotton (19:20), Dave Pearce (20:34), Derek Guess (20:26), Craig Sabin (21:35) and John Grindley (20:54) completing their line-up.
Four places adrift in 74th position were Charnwood AC as Loughborough student Steve Mears (21:49) combined with Mark Crofts (20:02), Scott Baxter (20:51), Peter Swaine (19:24), Richard Brown (20:28) and Glen North (20:42) to finish in 2:03.16.
