LOUGHBOROUGH students Kevin Deighton and Mark Vardy on Tuesday 14th September are going to begin a 6 day crawl through Lincolnshire to raise money for the charity CRY (Cardiac Risk in the Young).
Every week at least 12 apparently ‘fit and healthy’ young people in the UK die of undiagnosed heart conditions. Thanks to a free heart-screening clinic provided by CRY at Loughborough, a previously undiagnosed heart abnormality was detected in Mark, potentially saving his life. Unfortunately, one of Kev’s schoolmates was not so lucky and passed away due to an undiagnosed heart condition in 2008 aged just 19.
Money raised will help CRY to continue to do the tremendous work they are doing in raising awareness of heart problems in young people and providing free screening clinics to the public to diagnose such problems. Money will also help CRY to continue research in this area and provide support for affected families.
They are pretty sure that this is the first time that ultra-endurance crawling has been used to raise money and we expect it to be a demanding, yet rewarding challenge. Judging from a practice crawl, they are expecting around 9 hours solid crawling a day to cover 6 miles. They aim to spend 5 days crawling around Lincolnshire, before spending the 6th day crawling around Lincoln city centre to try to get donations from the public.
They will allow themselves to stand but not walk a single step in the 6 days including time spent in shops and accommodation etc.
Any donations you can make would be much appreciated. You can donate online at http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/team/crawl-4-cry. Alternatively, you can donate in cash, which they will add to the money raised online.

CHRIS Thompson, winner of the 10,000 metres silver medal at the recent European Championships will again compete at the Bupa Great Yorkshire Run on Sunday 5th September.
Loughborough University graduate Thompson will return to the Sheffield venue in a much better frame of mind having finally overcome the injuries which hindered his career since winning the European Under-23 5,000m gold medal in 2003.
The 29 year old Aldershot athlete’s performance in Barcelona, where he finished runner-up behind Aviva GB teammate Mo Farah, has enabled him to set his sights on more success in the future - in particular the 2012 London Olympic Games.
Thompson, who will be making his third successive appearance in the Bupa Great Yorkshire Run, will find it no easy task on his return to road racing despite his world class track form.
Another late addition, Spain's Chema Martinez, runner-up in Sheffield two years ago when Thompson finished sixth, is adamant he will be fully recovered after claiming the European marathon silver medal in Barcelona in blistering weather conditions.
"It's great news to include the pair in what is already a high quality field," said Andy Caine, elite athlete’s manager for the meeting. "I'm expecting much more from Thompson who finished fifth a year ago but who has now stepped up a few notches. Martinez is always someone for the big occasion."
The two new signings will face a field which includes former Olympic marathon champion Stefano Baldini, past World Championships 5,000m bronze medallist Craig Mottram and the British pair of Andrew Lemoncello and Lee Merrien.
Lemoncello was the first domestic runner at this year's Virgin London Marathon whilst Merrien exceeded expectations when taking eighth position in the European Marathon.
Highlights of the Bupa Great Yorkshire Run will be televised on Channel 5 at 10.30am on Saturday 11th September.

Steve Lewis continued his solid return to competition finishing third in the men’s pole vault event with a best of 5.40m as Richard Spiegelburg claimed a home victory for Germany with a height of 4.60.

LISA Dobriskey has confirmed that she will defend her 1500m title
Commonwealth Games title in Delhi in October.
The 26-year-old Loughborough-based athlete coached by George Gandy won her first major medal in Melbourne in 2006 and added a silver at the World Championships in Berlin last year.
However, she missed out on a medal at the European Championships in Barcelona.
Dobriskey commenting on her decision said: "To defend my title would mean a lot to me and the more racing experience I can get in championship events the better.
"Other than next year's World Championships, there are very few such opportunities between now and London 2012, as an athlete you don't get many chances to win medals at this level and that, after all, is what I train for."
Dobriskey finished third in the 1500m at the Samsung Diamond League Aviva London Grand Prix meeting in Crystal Palace last weekend and set a personal best in the 800m.
She has also said she would consider doubling up in the 800m in Delhi, if selected.
"The 800 metres would represent a different challenge and would, of course, provide me with even more racing experience," she added. "It adds another string to my bow and, as there would be less expectation, I think I would really be able to go out and enjoy the event after the 1500."
Dobriskey will run in the 1500m at Thursday's Samsung Diamond League meeting in Zurich before an 800m race in Lille next weekend.

Rebecca Peake went top of the UK shot rankings with a 16.76m victory, a mark over the 16m selection guideline for the Delhi Commonwealth Games.
Mark Edwards finished runner-up in the men’s shot competition with a best of 18.69m as Scott Rider set a championship record to win with 18.95.
Sarah McGreavy finished runner-up over the women’s 100m hurdles in 13.52secs as Gemma Bennett prevailed with 13.31.

MAX Eaves won the Canary Wharf Street Vault competition on Friday lunchtime (6th August) staged in Montgomery Square to promote the Samsung Diamond League Aviva London Grand Prix, which is being held on August 13th and 14th at Crystal Palace.
Eaves (NEB), the 22-year-old Loughboorugh University student coached by Alan Richardson, claimed victory with a best of 5.40m ahead of Robert Warensjo (Swindon) 5.05m as fellow African Violets Alasdair Strange (WGEL) and Paul Walker (Sale) tied on countback with Andrew Marsh (Bir), 5.00m, for third place. Christian North (WGEL) completed the line-up in 6th on 4.80m.
Eaves commented: "We were in Trafalgar Square a couple of years ago jumping between two buses, but this is a much better location because there's a bigger crowd.
"It's windy, but if you catch it right you can swing round and get a nice tail-wind, which is good.
"We've got the London double decker here and that's only 4.60m high. All of us can jump over five metres, so we can smash that height."

LOUGHBOROUGH University’s students have won the British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) overall trophy for the 30th year running.
Athletic Union President Richard Smith collected the trophy on 16th July from 2003 Rugby World Cup winner Josh Lewsey at the BUCS Ball, held at Keele Hall.
BUCS is the national governing body for higher education sport in the UK. Each year over 100,000 students and more than 4,000 student teams compete in around 50 sports as part of the BUCS programme of competitions, leagues and events.
This year Loughborough enjoyed wins in Rugby Union, Football, Swimming, Athletics, Table Tennis and Netball, to name just a few, as well as contesting finals in a whole range of other sports.
The final points tally for Loughborough was 5585.5, a record under the new BUCS system. The 2nd placed institution gaining 3368.5 points.
Richard Smith commented: “It was a massive honour to receive the trophy on behalf of everyone involved in BUCS sport at Loughborough University. The competition at the top gets tougher every year, and it is testament to the hard work and commitment of everyone that this year we won by a record number of points.
“We have a fantastic culture on campus that spreads wider than just sport, and it’s our tremendous strength in depth, with our 2nd, 3rd and 4th teams regularly contesting the higher BUCS leagues, that keeps us at the top.”
Loughborough University’s Director of Sport, Chris Earle, added: “We’re immensely proud of every student who contributed to this record-setting year of BUCS sport. It’s no easy task to repeat the BUCS wins, so to reach three decades without loss is an amazing achievement.”

Wednesday 21st July 2010
DAVID Martin and Gemma Werrett led the way for the Loughborough students in action at the Scottish National Track & Field Championships incorporating the Commonwealth Trials at Dunfermline’s Pitreavie Stadium winning gold over the 400m and 100m hurdles respectively.
Over a rain-soaked and blustery weekend (17th-18th July) any chance of achieving Commonwealth qualifying times were blown away in Fife's home of athletics.
However, despite the conditions there were a set of fine performances produced by Loughborough University student athletes as 21-year-old David Martin (Victoria Park City of Glasgow) claimed victory in the men’s 400m hurdles final with a time of 53.32secs to defeat the Kilbarchan duo of Martin Lipton (54.14) and Connor Henderson (56.36).
Birchfield Harrier Gemma Werrett clocked a time of 15.13secs (-3.0) in the women’s 100m hurdles final to take victory ahead of Catriona Pennet (Edinburgh), second in 15.21, with Holly Belch (Sale) taking bronze in 16.17.
Other highlights for the African Violets included Patrick Swan (400m) and Abby McGhee (1500m) securing silver medals in their respective events.
Swan (Gateshead) finished runner-up in the men’s 400m final with a time of 47.45secs as Kris Robertson (Shafesbury Barnet) prevailed in 47.07.
