WORLD U23 triathlon champion Hollie Avil is currently training in South Africa ahead of the 2010 season below is the latest blog on how she is progressing.

"Words cannot describe what a fantastic time I'm having out here in Stellenbosch, South Africa. From the gorgeous scenery to the amazing restaurants, I really do love it here! Being out here for The Don Wedding has meant I've met some fantastic people too. Again, words cannot describe how beautiful Tim and Kelly's wedding was. Such a perfect day for a perfect couple.

"So I've been training away in the heat. What I love about here is that you can get your training done early, due to the early sunrise, and then have the rest of the day to chill and do what you wish. I've had trips to Table Mountain, Wildlife Parks and several beautiful beaches. By the sounds of things, I've been able to do a lot more training outside here then at home. I was able to ride at 6.30am for 2.5 hours on Christmas Day - I certainly wouldn't have done that back in snowy England! The running is amazing here too! Trails upon trails and fields upon fields to run on. I've had the perfect Stellenbosch tour guides too! Tim, Fraser Cartmell, Gavin Noble and Nick Saunders (They are all lovers of the Bosch!) have shown me several training loops and routes (and the best cafes!). Mari Rabie has also kindly let me stay at her house, she has just arrived back from her family's beach house and I can't wait to do some training and spend some time with her!

"So 2010...It's going to see a big change for me...I made quite a big decsion a few weeks ago, after much thought (and taring my hair out!). I have decided to put my first year of my Management Science degree in the bank and defer the rest of it for a while. I really enjoyed my first year, but the second year has thrown subjects at me that I am really struggling to enjoy and fully understand. What is frustrating is that I feel like I can't put 100% into my degree and 100% into triathlon at the same time. I am not the kind of person who can do something half-heartedly. I don't just want to end up with a half hearted degree result. I want to be able to fully understand what I am studying and to be able to put in the extra hours required for it. So I have deferred my degree for the rest for this year. I will review in the summer whether or not I wish to start up my second year again. However, I am the kind of person who likes to have something else running alongside triathlon. I won't be cutting education totally for the next few years, I'm going to look at doing an open university degree in something that I feel passionate about. I may look at getting a bit of Philosophy back in my life! But the bottom line is... I just don't want to look back and after London 2012 and question whether I did everything I could do to try and win that gold. It was a tough desicion, but Im certain it's the right one.

"So 2010 sees me as a full time triathlete! I'm pretty excited! It has been so nice to be out here and not have to stress about revision!"

Happy New Year to everyone!

LOUGHBOROUGH Sports Development Centre employee Cathy Rooney been named Sport England Club Volunteer of the Year at the Sunday Times Sportswomen of the Year awards.

Eleven months ago, when she was enjoying a quiet drink down the pub, Cathy Rooney came up with the idea of establishing a local running club for non runners, mainly as a way of keeping fit. And it was not long before this idea, the Woodthorpe Huffers & Puffers, actually came to fruition; participation figures this past year alone have blossomed, with more than 150 women of all shapes and sizes signing up to improve their fitness.

Rooney, from Nottingham, who works full time for the sports development team at Loughborough University, has managed to oversee and maintain this dramatic progression since January as this community club has grown from strength to strength, with numerous personal success stories. In fact when a beginner’s course was launched in April, almost 100 women turned up, exceeding all reasonable expectations. Women who could barely run for minute are now entering 10km races and successfully completing in half marathons.

The Huffers & Puffers concept has now been launched on the Loughborough University campus, and has attracted new staff members who are enjoying taking up their new hobby of running.

BRITISH international 400m specialist Richard Buck has moved to the high-performance centre in Loughborough to improve his chances of making the 2012 Olympics.

The 22-year-old has left his previous base in Leeds and will spend the next three years in the East Midlands.

Buck commented: "After I'd talked with the coaches, we all agreed it would be in my best interests to come down here to really focus on 2012.

"Being a professional athlete now, I needed to get into the professional setting that UK Athletics are offering."

Buck, a former United Kingdom indoor champion, will now receive personal coaching from Russian sprint expert Michael Khmel.

"It's not so much the facilities that are better but the support team, the physios, sports psychologists and nutritionists," said Buck.

"It's not a time to be sitting around and just hoping things are going to come together, you've got to be pro-active and make sure they come together.

"So few people get these opportunities that when they come along, I couldn't turn it down."

Buck will also receive funding which would not have been available had he stayed at Leeds.

"The funding's not brilliant but it's massively helpful and is giving me access to the medical side and the sports scientists as well," added Buck.

"It's really exciting, scary and I'm a bit nervous. It's all new territory for me, but at the same time I'm looking forward to the experience."

The appointments are part of the new performance structure under Head Coach Charles van Commenee and Canadian Kevin Tyler, Head of Coaching and Development.

Taking up the role enables me to continue my coaching of Jessica Ennis and support of others including the World Youth Champion, Katarina Thompson and our number one junior decathlete Daniel Gardiner through to the London Olympics.

“Having coached Jessica since the age of 11 guiding her from beginner to winner, I believe I am in a unique position to support, promote and understand the needs of an event from grassroots to elite. Being part of the senior performance team will also enable me to have a more influential role in the strategy, direction and development of Combined Events in partnership with the Home Countries and the wider combined events community.”

Ahmed, who is currently based in Birmingham will develop the high jump set up at Loughborough, commented: “The coaching structure of athletics in the UK is undergoing a major overhaul with some proactive changes and I am pleased to be part of that team and vision.

"Being able to coach full time will have short and long term challenges. 2010 will be an exciting year for athletes with the World Indoors, European Championships and Commonwealth Games.

“In the long term, it will be an honour to help broaden the talent, of the next generation of coaches who will be pivotal to the success, our sport is working towards in 2012, 2016 and beyond.”

Commenting on the appointments, van Commenee said: “These appointments continue to fulfill the strategic plans which were put into place earlier this year. It continues the pathway towards realising our ambitions for 2012 and the wider development of the sport.

“Both Toni and Fuzz will firstly be dedicated to the coaching of individual athletes heading towards the games in London and will secondly support Kevin in enhancing the development of the event and the coaching within it.”

LOUGHBOROUGH graduate Steve Backley was inducted into the England Athletics Hall of Fame at the annual awards night which was an evening that celebrated the achievements of athletes, coaches, officials and volunteers.

Over 240 guests came together at Aston Villa FC for a dinner and to witness the presentation of the England Athletics volunteer awards and the induction of 13 athletics stars spanning over a century into the England Athletics Hall of Fame. A raffle with prizes donated by our sponsors also raised over £1000 for the Ron Pickering Memorial Fund.
Steve Backley – Profile

It was Steve Backley's privilege but misfortune to have been the main rival of the greatest of all javelin throwers, Jan Zelezny, for most of his career. Backley had the distinction of being the first British male to set a field event world record and his medal haul was awesome.

Backley started his athletics career as a cross-country runner but at 14 decided that chucking a javelin was more fun. Within four years, coached by John Trower, he was the 1987 European junior champion and the following year he set a world junior record of 79.50m progressed at such a rate that he ended up ranked as world's number one, setting a Commonwealth record of 85.90m when winning at the World Cup.

In 1990 he won the first of three Commonwealth titles, initiated an amazing sequence of four European championships and unleashed a world record throw of 89.58m, even if it did survive only 12 days before Zelezny wrested it from him. However, Backley reclaimed the record later in the season with 90.98m.

A worldwide poll conducted by the IAAF voted him male athlete of the year. Backley's consolation was that he had become the first Briton in any event to obtain an Olympic medal in three Games. He took his final Olympic bow in 2004, placing fourth.

LOUGHBOROUGH University’s George Gandy has been announced by UK Athletics as the new National Event Coach for Endurance, working under Head of Endurance Ian Stewart, as part of the new performance structure put in place by Head Coach Charles van Commenee.

Gandy, who has over 40 years experience in the sport, has long been recognised as one of the UK’s top endurance coaches and has worked with athletes such as Seb Coe, Jon Brown and Jack Buckner from his renowned Loughborough University coaching base.

Among his many achievements he worked with Coe through to 800m and 1500m Olympic gold and Buckner to 5,000m European gold but most recently he coached 1500m talent Lisa Dobriskey to World Championship silver in Berlin.

Gandy commented: “I am deeply honoured to be appointed as a National Event Coach for UKA. I see myself working and supporting a plan which is already largely in place and look forward to forming successful partnerships with other leading coaches and athletes within the 800m to marathon event group.

“Having been associated with successful organisations and teams for a number of years, it is an exciting but challenging prospect to elevate this experience onto an international stage. The connection with the 2012 Olympics is obviously thrilling but the other major competitions on the way must not be forgotten.”

UKA head coach Charles van Commenee added: "To have George working as a national event coach brings us one step closer to competing strategic plans which were put into place earlier this year.

"He brings with him vast experience and a proven track record of coaching athletes to global medal success."

STEVIE Stockton has taken a positive decision in her fledgling career by switching from England to Wales with selection for the 2010 Commonwealth Games in mind.

With a selection of the UK’s top ranked athletes Lisa Dobriskey, the reigning Commonwealth champion, Hannah England and world junior gold medallist Steph Twell all qualifying for England the task of making the team for the games that take place from 3rd-14th October next year in the Indian city of New Delhi will be extremely difficult for an emerging athlete such as Stockton.

The 20-year-old Vale Royal athlete, silver medallist at the BUCS Championships and the AAA U23 Championships this past summer is currently coached at Loughborough University by the new head of Endurance for the United Kingdom George Gandy where she is studying sports science, and qualifies for Wales through her mum Nicola.

WORLD Under-23 triathlon champion Hollie Avil will put her running shoes on this Sunday as the Loughborough University student takes part in the BUPA Great South Run in Portsmouth.

The 19-year-old British international has put her swimming costume and bike away to increase her mileage on the road in preparation for Sunday’s big race.

“My main focus over the past two-weeks has been the build-up to the Great South Run, it’s 10miles, so bit of a different distance to what I’m use to! I’m really excited for the race though,” she reflected.

“I’m also really enjoying the run focus training. I’ve been doing a bit of training with the runners here at Loughborough. It’s hard work, but I love it! It’s nice to run with some different people.”

Avil won the World Under-23 ITU Triathlon title on Australia's Gold Coast back in September with a combined time of 1hr 56mins 38secs to add the Under-23 title to the World and European junior titles she won in 2007.

LOUGHBOROUGH University student Hollie Avil representing Great Britain has won the World Under-23 ITU Triathlon title on Australia's Gold Coast.

The 19-year-old crossed the line in a combined time of 1hr 56mins 38secs to add the Under-23 title to the World and European junior titles she won in 2007.

"You can't really ask for much more - with one junior world title and now an under 23 world title, I guess the senior one comes next, but that might take a few years."

Loughborough Students Athletic Union (AU), which overseas and supports students in BUCS competition, boasts over 4,500 members regularly competing in its 54 student-run sports clubs.

AU President Rich Smith is quick to congratulate everyone who has helped Loughborough achieve further success this year.

“We are delighted to have continued our proud sporting tradition and finished top of the overall national student leagues for the 29th consecutive year,” he said. “To win the elite BUCS league table by such a margin shows our strength in depth across so many sports.

“It’s a testament to all our committed students who balance training and playing sport alongside demanding degrees, as well as the coaches and support staff who have played an integral role in helping us achieve this success.”

During 2008/09, 143 higher education institutions entered BUCS sporting leagues and competitions, all competing for points across 50 sports.

Chris Earle, Director of Sport at Loughborough added:
“The University is immensely proud of the achievements of our students who have contributed to this success.

“The consistently high standard of our performances in the sports arena are a reflection in the excellence of the work that goes on behind the scenes in our Athletic Union, Sports Development Centre and facilities management teams – all of whom make a significant contribution to our continued success in the BUCS competition”
