LOUGHBOROUGH Sports Scholar Lee McConnell (Shaftesbury Barnet) secured the Commonwealth qualifying standard for Delhi 2010 in the 200 metres when winning the CAU Inter-Counties title at Bedford over the weekend (May 24th-25th) clocking a time of 23.29secs (wind - 0.7) also inside the Berlin IAAF World Championships 'B' mark (23.30).

Now fully fit and confident McConnell maintains that she can keep on getting faster, the 30-year-old from Glasgow began her season off to an unusual start when she came fourth in the 150 metres in Manchester at the event in which Usain Bolt set a new world best time, but she now looks to concentrate on her individual event.

McConnell commented: "The individual comes first and then the relay. But the relay is very important too, to myself and to the other girls. We've got a very strong team now, so it should be good.

"At the moment it's actually quite difficult to get into the British team, so that's the first aim. Make the British team in the individual and just take it from there.

"It's really good. We can do well in the relays because we have such strength in depth now. Before we only had one or two good runners. Now we have a good squad of six to eight of us who are really fighting to get into the team and that makes all the difference."

Other highlights for Loughborough students in Bedford were produced in the Men’s Mile where Gary Bradbury (Woking) set a lifetime best of 4:14.06 to take victory out pacing Sunderland’s Gavin Massingham (4:14.15).

Loughborough Alumni Rebecca Peake smashed her personal best to win the Shot competition with a mark of 16.55 metres to follow her victory at the McCain Loughborough international the previous weekend.

Leicestershire’s Callum Priestley won the 110m Hurdles in 14.01secs ahead of Sale Harrier Nick Gayle (14.17) with fellow county athlete Julian Adeniran (Shaftesbury Barnet) third in a season’s best of 14.48.

2009 Nike BMC Gold Standard Races

Trafford Athletics Stadium, Stretford, Manchester

Wednesday 13th May 2009

CHARLOTTE BEST led the way for a string of fine performances for the Loughborough Students at the Nike (BMC) British Milers Club Gold Standard races at the Trafford Athletics Stadium completing a quality win in the Women’s 800m ‘A’ race.

Best (24), a World University Games bronze medalist over the distance in 2007 clocked a time of 2mins 06.16secs to finish ahead of current Loughborough athlete and club mate at Crawley AC, Dani Christmas (2:06.94), with Alumni Lisa Dobriskey returning to track action for the first time since finishing fourth in the Beijing Olympic 1500m final last September and subsequentially suffering a stress fracture injury to her back at the beginning of the year, taking fourth in 2:07.73.

In the Men’s 800m ‘A’ race Ben Green made it a double success for Loughborough taking victory for the 22-year-old Warrington athlete in a time of 1:52.22 with fellow Alumni Frank Baddick second in 1:53.02.

THREE Loughborough University students Jo Maddick, Suzie Richards and Cat Foley are trading their trainers for bikes this summer.

The trio aim to cycle the 800+ miles from Lands End, the southern most tip of the United Kingdom to John O'Groats the most northerly point in 18 days from 9th to 26th August 2009.

They are hoping to raise money for the charity 'Motivation', a Bristol-based charity that aims to enhance the quality of life of people with mobility disabilities.

Motivation aims to enhance the quality of life of people with mobility disabilities in developing countries. From setting up wheel chair businesses, providing prosthetic limbs, employing disabled people previously seen as unemployable and providing equipment for disabled sport. Motivation works in numerous countries with many governments and organizations.

It is guaranteed to be 18 days of challenges, saddle sore bums, sweat, tears and exhaustion but it will be an adventure of a life-time!

As dedicated athletes they feel passionately that wherever you live in the world, and what ever your physical ability you should have equal opportunities in life.

For Suzie they hold a personal appeal,

“I spent eight-months in Sri Lanka, India and Nepal during my Gap year before coming to Loughborough and unfortunately was sat on Unawatuna, a Sri Lankan Beach on December 26th 2004 when the Asian Tsunami hit, thankfully I escaped with minor injuries but many others around me were less fortunate.

“I remember the extreme generosity and help the Sri Lankan people gave me, they had lost everything, from family members to homes and businesses but they were more concerned about me!’ Motivation has worked closely with Sri Lankans in the aftermath of the Tsunami, providing Wheel chairs, training/ maintenance and construction workshops for Tsunami Victims.”

The girls all came to study at Loughborough University in September 2005 and are great friends, they train and live together and decided this would be a perfect way to end their university experience!

A personal challenge, a chance to raise money for a great charity and a chance to show everyone that girls can cycle and camp their way across the country!

UK Athletics are holding an official endurance training camp at altitude in preparation for the summer track season for the first time.

Currently a contingent of six British athletes arrived at the Font Romeu on French side of the Pyrenees mountains, famous for being a training base for the UK’s most successful long distance runner of the last decade, world marathon record-holder Paula Radcliffe.

Radcliffe is currently in Font Romeu recovering from her recent foot surgery and she is being joined at the resort by fellow Loughborough athletes European indoor 3,000m 6th placer Nick McCormick, UK steeplechase record-holder Helen Clitheroe, European 800m bronze medallist Becky Lyne and former British U23 international Ryan McLoed.

Also in Font Romeu are the European Indoor 3,000m champion Mo Farah and former British U23 international Elizabeth Brathwaite where they are being joined by Ugandan internationals Boniface Kiprop and Moses Kipsiro as training partners for Farah.

The camp will run until 23rd May. Joining the group for three days is James Li, a renowned distance coach who guided Bernard Lagat (USA) to a 1500m/5000m double at the 2007 World Championships in Osaka. Li has been contracted by UKA to advise leading British athletes and coaches on a consultancy basis on several separate occasions in the coming 12 months.

UKA National Endurance Coach Ian Stewart said: “We need to expose our athletes to this type of training environment. It has worked for Paula and it can work for other British athletes too.”

In the Men’s 400m Hurdles Michael Baker and Tom Burton secured a terrific 1-2 for Loughborough over the line winning gold and silver in 52.53 and 52.83secs respectively following a very close run race.

In the middle-distance events three-time junior European cross-country champion Steph Twell representing St Mary’s Twickenham, who narrowly missed out on the 1500m final at last summers Beijing Olympics, eased home in 16mins 03secs to break the 11-year-old championship record by a margin of eight seconds.

Twell, the 19-year-old reigning world junior 1500m champion on her BUCS debut beat club mate from Aldershot, Farnham & District Emma Pallant representing Brunel, who went on to claim 1500m gold as Dani Christmas and Stevie Stockton claimed silver medals for Loughborough in the 800m and 1500m with times of 2:07.60 and 4:25.15 respectively.

In the field events Denae Matthew, club mate of Sarah Adams at Leicester, also secured a fine silver for Loughborough in the Triple Jump with a best of 12.22 metres.

In the Men’s competition Paul Walker duly won gold in the Pole Vault with a height of 5.10m as Loughborough clinched both the 4x100m and 4x400m relays to cap off a fine day for the African Violets, who went on to win women's team event with a total of 43 points, ahead of Brunel University (105.5) and the University of Wales Institute, Cardiff (53).

Loughborough clinched 4x400m gold, however, Middlesex sprinters put on a fine performance to beat Loughborough into second place in the 4x100m, winning in 41.06secs.

2009 BUCS Track & Field Championships

Bedford International Stadium

Sunday 3rd May 2009 - Day 2

KIEREN KELLY secured a remarkable fifth consecutive British Universities title with a superb championship record of 18.21metres as the Loughborough students gained two individual gold’s on the second day of competition at the BUCS Track & Field Championships in Bedford, as Ruth Senior regained her crown in the 2,000m Steeplechase having won the event back in 2007.

Kieren Kelly transferred his excellent indoor form to the outdoor arena –this following a winter campaign that witnessed the 23-year-old Irish international throw over 19 metres for the first time – here in Bedford he claimed a fifth straight title winning the competition with a championship record mark of 18.21 metres.

Lithuania international and reigning BUCS indoor champion Rimantas Martisauskas (Leeds Met Carnegie) with throw of 17.90 claimed silver as Ryan Spencer-Jones (UWIC) secured bronze with 15.91.

Ruth Senior from the City of Norwich club that has produced a string of top steeplechasers from their ranks including former British record-holder Barbara Parker regained her title over the 2,000m distance as the 21-year-old representing Loughborough crossed the line fourteen seconds clear of Laura Parker (St Mary's) to regain her title from 2007 in a time of six minutes 49.68 seconds with Alison Crocker (Oxford) taking bronze.

2009 BUCS Track & Field Championships

Bedford International Stadium

Saturday 2nd May 2009 – Day 1

CANADIAN international sprinter Seyi Smith (100m), British Under-23 record-holder Sarah Holt (Hammer) and defending champion Rosie Semenytsh (Javelin) provided the highlights for the Loughborough Students on the opening day of competition at the 2009 BUCS Track & Field Championships at the Bedford International Stadium with a selection fine individual gold medal winning performances for the African Violets.

On the track Seyi Smith claimed victory in the 100m winning in a time of 10.32scs as the 22-year-old crossed the line clear of Leevan Yearwood (Middlesex) and third placed Dan Cossins (Bath). Smith, the defending BUCS champion over 200m recently returned from a warm weather training trip to Australia.

The other success for Loughborough came in the women’s field events where Sarah Holt and Rosie Semenytsh both claimed individual titles in fine style completing comprehensive victories.

Holt was a class apart in the Hammer competition as the 22-year-old Sale Harrier won with a mark of 58.52m, whilst, Semenytsh secured victory with a throw of 47.05m.

Matt Burton won silver for Loughborough in the Men’s Long Jump final with a leap of 7.24m as Anthony Timms (Leeds Met Carnegie) claimed gold with a mark of 7.45m.

In the Men’s Discus final Brett Morse (UWIC) smashed the championship record with a massive 59.52m throw as Chris Scott secured silver for Loughborough with a best of 52.66m. Team mate and 2004 Athens Paralympic gold medalist Dan Greaves finished fourth with a mark of 46.88m.

Sophie Hine completed the medal haul with a bronze in the women's High Jump with a leap of 1.75m finishing ahead on countback from team mate Vikki Hubbard in the competition won by Jillian Drouin (Bournemouth) with a height of 1.81m.

OLYMPIC hopeful and entrepreneur, James Lock, is set to launch his own brand of high performance race wear developed specifically for swimmers, cyclists and runners.

The 24-year-old Loughborough graduate has been a competitive athlete since he was ten years old. As a junior he was a national ranked swimmer and runner and he turned to triathlon when he became a student at Loughborough University.

In 2006, the same year he graduated with a first class degree in Architectural Engineering and Design Management, James became World Biathle Champion and World Amateur Aquathlon Champion and last year he upped the stakes in triathlon when he started racing as an elite. After a fantastic debut season, in which he finished seventh in the Elite Grand Prix, James now has his sights firmly set on the 2012 Olympics.

On top of achieving academic and sporting success, and spending around 16 hours a week in training, James has also found the time to set up his own business which he has based at Loughborough's Innovation Centre.

Drawing on his vast sporting experience and the experiences of fellow athletes, James has developed his own brand of high performance race-wear – Zone3 – which utilises the latest technologies and materials to increase speed, enhance overall appearance and improve comfort.

James said: “Triathlon training gives you a lot of time to think . . . every length I’ve swum or mile I’ve cycled or ran, I’ve been thinking about how I could improve my performance.”

He continued: “Although British triathletes have been a dominant force on the world stage for several years now, invariably they wear brands from the other side of the world. I knew I could develop a British brand that reflects the level of sporting talent we have in this country.”

James has drawn on his own experiences and those of his sporting colleagues to tailor his sportswear specifically to the needs of the triathlete and his products incorporate some truly innovative features that are not available from other brands. His wetsuit, for example, features Pro Speed™ arm and leg cuffs which make it easier to take it off, saving valuable seconds during the transition from swimming to cycling in a triathlon event.

James has big ambitions to see Zone3 on the world map by 2011 and for his sportswear to have a high-profile presence at the 2012 Olympics.

He says: “Some of the world’s top triathletes are already using our wetsuits and racing suits so I am confident we will achieve this.”

The first exclusive range of Zone3 wetsuits and trisuits will be on sale through the Zone3 website: www.RaceZone3.com from May and the full range will be available in 2010.

BRITISH steeplechase record-holder Helen Clitheroe claimed a fine individual victory at the 2009 Luzerner Stadtlauf road race in Luzern, Switzerland, as Loughborough-based Nick McCormick also coached by John Nuttall broke an African domination to secure a quality fourth place in the men’s race.

Beijing Olympian Helen Clitheroe secured her fine victory in the Swiss city of Luzern as a host of European athletes dominated the 4.250km race where the 35-year-old Preston Harrier won by a margin of seven seconds over the line ahead of Slovenia’s European indoor championships 1500m bronze medalist Sonja Roman in a time of 13mins 16.1secs. Adrienne Herzog of the Netherlands finished third a further two-seconds adrift.

In the men’s race Loughborough-based Nick McCormick transferred his fine indoor form to the road, a winter campaign that witnessed him win the UK 3,000m title and claim a 6th place finish in the final of the Turin European Championships last month as the 27-year-old Morpeth Harrier broke the African domination to secure a well-deserved fourth place - clocking a time of 25:17.9 as Salil Stanley Kipkosgei led a Kenyan 1-2-3 over the line winning with a mark of 24:50.1.

NICOLA SANDERS made an impressive start to her outdoor campaign as the 2007 European indoor 400m gold medallist stepped up in distance to the 800m at the Mt. SAC Relays in Los Angeles.

The 26-year-old Loughborough University graduate coached by Tony Lester clocked a time of 2:03.41 to take victory ahead of fellow Brit Tara Bird (2:04.96).

Much was expected of Sanders in 2008, but for the second consecutive year, injuries limited her racing schedule and clearly not fully fit, Sanders was eliminated in the semi-final stages of the 400m in Beijing, but ran a season's best of 50.71, followed by a sub-50 relay leg in the 4x400m relay final.

DAVID GILLICK produced another excellent performance when he won the 400m on the third day of competition at the Mt. SAC Relays in Los Angeles, to follow up on his fast 200m opener a week earlier.

Drawn in lane 6 the 25-year-old Loughborough graduate and two-time European indoor champion ran comfortably for 300m before taking up the lead at the start of the home straight and then cruised to victory in a time of 45.80secs, with Reggie Wyatt (USA) second in 46.38.

Fellow Alumnus Vicki Barr won the women's 400m in 52.92secs as compatriot Meghan Beesley - who won bronze in last year's World Junior Championship - claimed the 400m hurdles in 57.65 with Loughborough team-mate Justine Kinney securing third.

Barr also finished fifth over 200m in 23.79, just ahead of Abi Oyepitan.

Dwain Chambers had to settle for second in first outdoor race of the summer season, the European 60m indoor champion clocked 20.51seconds in the 200m as American Lionel Larry claimed victory.

Tyrone Edgar won the men's 100m in a time of 10.20secs as American Carmelita Jeter clocked the fastest time in the world this year to win the women's 100m in 10.96.

LOUGHBOROUGH Aluminus Michael Bingham outpaced the field to win the men's 400m title and lead the Wake Forest track & field team on the final day of the ACC Track & Field Championships at the Cobb Track & Field Facility on the campus of the University of Miami on Saturday 18th April.

A strong headwind over the first part of race kept the opening pace on the slow side. But at the 200m point, Bingham made his move. Within five strides it was clear that he had built up enough momentum on the final curve and no one would catch him. In the last 100m, he ran away from the field, winning easily by almost a full second.

His time of 45.32 is the fastest collegiate time and is tied for the fourth-fastest time in the world this year. The mark also bettered his regional qualifying mark and set a new school and personal best. He broke his own school-record of 45.57 which he set back in 2007.

"It was very windy at the start, and a lot of other guys might want to get out fight that head wind," said Bingham. "I just wanted to be sure that I could take it home in the last 200m."

Bingham made it a clean sweep of the 400m races this season as he also won the indoor ACC and NCAA titles. At the NCAA Indoor Championships, Bingham also ran the fastest indoor time in the world to that date.

IRELAND’S David Gillick has been quick to put the disappointment of falling in the 400m at the European Indoors with an excellent win over 200m in California at the Rafer Johnson/Jackie Joyner-Kersee Invitational held at UCLA’s Drake Stadium on Sunday 12th April.

In his first outdoor competition of the year the 25-year-old Loughborough University graduate current warm weather training in Southern California with coach Nick Dakin’s squad, clocked a time of 21.38secs that compares very favourably with his personal best of 21.21 set in Dublin in April 2005.

Wednesday 8th April 2009

AS with many of the world’s top athletes and coaches Loughborough University's Nick Dakin has taken his elite squad abroad for warm weather training, and for Team Dakin this has been a 6,000 mile trip to the west coast of America to sample the spring sunshine of California in preparation for one of the most important of all outdoor seasons with the Berlin IAAF World Championships on the horizon starting on August 15th.

Dakin, a world-class coach and long hurdles specialist at Loughborough, despite some pressure from UK Athletics to use their official training venues has decided to follow his own tried and tested method and use the excellent facilities on offer at the University of Irvine based in Orange County, Los Angeles, where the legendary American sprinter Edwin Moses trained for this Olympic titles and world-record at 400m hurdles.

Included in the squad in California is the European leader for 2008 over 400m, Martyn Rooney, the 2007 European Indoor champion David Gillick and fellow sprinters Richard Davenport, Justine Kinney, Meghan Beesley and Michelle Carey.

LOUGHBROUGH University looks more like a ghost town at the moment as three large groups of athletes have flown around the globe to sunnier locations for warm weather training ahead of the outdoor season.

The African Violets are certainly flying across the world as George Gandy and his group are currently in Stellenbosch, South Africa - Nick Dakin’s sprinters are on the west coast of America in Los Angeles and Bill Foster has also taken his middle-distance group to the USA, based in the spectacular surroundings of Arizona in the town of Flagstaff. A further group is also set to travel to Portugal this week.

Foster’s group in Arizona includes Emma Leigh-Heighway, Alexa Joel, Gemma Hillier, Jodie Ledger, Lucy O’Goram, Joanna Callaway, Kate Buchan, Kirsty Hamilton, Claire Tarplee, Kirsty Milner; and recovering from a foot injury that ruled him out of the Turin European Championships in March is the AAA indoor 1500m bronze medallist Chris Warburton.

Aside from the daily workouts in the high altitude surrounds of Flagstaff the group have also taken the opportunity to visit the Grand Canyon National Park which has made the town such a popular destination with tourists and the gambling capital of America with the bright lights of Las Vegas.
