Gillick heads Ireland’s team for Barcelona Europeans

Wednesday 14th July 2010

DOUBLE indoor European gold medallist David Gillick heads the 30-strong Ireland team for the 20th SPAR European Athletics Championships in Barcelona that takes place between 26th July to 1st August.

Gillick will run the individual 400m and the 4x400m relay, and will be joined by fellow Nick Dakin coached sprinters at Loughborough Justine Kinney, fresh from her national title success last weekend, and Beijing Olympian Michelle Carey who will both compete in the individual 400m hurdles and 4x400m relay.

“We are delighted with the initial team selection for Barcelona. We targeted improvements from Gothenburg two-years ago and this now seems to be coming to fruition. This strength of athletics in Ireland was clearly evident at this year’s European Team Championships in Budapest where we dominated on the track and maintained our First League status,

“All the signs look positive as the clock ticks down towards London 2012. A major bonus this year is the inclusion of three-relay teams. This clearly indicates that our sprinters are prepared to step and make their presence felt,” said Irish team manager Patsy McGonagle.

Kinney wins Irish national 400m hurdles title

Sunday 11th July 2010

JUSTINE Kinney secured the Irish national 400m hurdles title at the 2010 Woodies DIY Track & Field Championships staged at Santry Stadium.

The 22-year-old Loughborough University student outpaced compatriot Bronagh Furlong to take victory in a time of 57.78secs narrowly outside of her personal best of 57.13 set at the UK Women's League Premier fixture in Birmingham last month.

Loughborough graduate and Beijing Olympian Michelle Carey opted for the 400m flat rather than the one-lap hurdles to claim bronze in 53.73secs as Joanne Cuddihy claimed victory in 52.76.

Double European indoor champion David Gillick played down any injury worry ahead of the upcoming SPAR European Championships in Barcelona after pulling out of the competition with a slight foot problem after finishing second in a 100m heat.

Gillick had dropped down in distance after consolidating his ranking as second-fastest 400m man in Europe this season with another sub-45 second run (44.95) in Spain on Friday night.

"It's just a little niggle on the arch of my foot," Gillick said. "I raced well on it in Friday night but it was a little bit sore when I was warming up and I need to nip it in the bud now because it's only two weeks to Barcelona."

Dobriskey back on track with Trafford victory

Thursday 17th June 2010

WORLD silver medallist made a low-key season debut over 1500m at the Nike BMC Trafford Grand Prix meeting in Stretford on Tuesday evening (15th June) winning a mixed-race following her decision not to compete over the distance at last Saturday’s IAAF Diamond League meeting in New York.

In only her second race of the season having been troubled by a niggle in her Achilles the 26-year-old Loughborough-based athlete clocked a time of 4mins 14.11secs, followed home by fellow George Gandy coached athlete Laura Kenney (4:25.36).

On her outdoor season debut last month Dobriskey finished fourth over 3,000m in the traditional curtain raiser to the UK domestic season at the McCain Loughborough International clocking 9:12.42 in the race won by Fay Fullerton (9:12.42).

In heat 3 of the mixed 800m Loughborough College student Charlotte Best, part of the ‘On Camp with Kelly’ programme also made her outdoor season debut over 800m with a time of 2:06.12.

In the men’s 3,000m Paul Miles (Leicester OWLS) set a fine lifetime best to take victory in 8:11.46 ahead of Sale Harrier Anthony Ford (8:22.00), the fifth place finisher for Great Britain in the ‘B’ race at the recent Marseille European Cup 10,000m.
