44.98secs - Rooney rockets to European lead with Geneva victory

Saturday 12th June 2010

MARTYN Rooney clocked the fastest time in Europe this season with a fine victory over 400m in Geneva.

The 23-year-old Loughborough-based athlete clocked a time of 44.98secs to secure victory ahead of training partner, Ireland’s David Gillick (45.32), becoming the first European athlete to dip under the 45-second barrier in the 2010 outdoor season. Conrad Williams finished third with a new personal best of 45.45.

Rooney, runner-up in the same race last year, as with Gillick an Olympic finalist in Beijing 2008 and also coached by Nick Dakin, will look to take this fine form into next weekend’s SPAR European Team Championships representing Great Britain in Bergen, Norway.

“I’m really happy with today’s run in Geneva, it’s another step forward and a great confidence booster going into next weekend,” a delighted Rooney commented afterwards.

“The organisers put together a quality field so I was always going to have to run fast to win, running sub-45 for the first time just reinforces where Nick and I though we were before today,” he continued.

This performance now makes Rooney one of the firm favourites for gold at next months European Championships in Barcelona.

UK indoor champion Richard Buck won the ‘B’ race in 46.23secs ahead of compatriot Graham Hedman (46.47).

Loughborough Sports Scholar Lee McConnell won the women’s 400m in 51.67secs and finished 7th in the 200m with a time of 23.60. Sarah Adams won the 400m ‘B’ race in 53.94secs.

Current Loughborough student Nathan Woodward continued his fine season as the 21-year-old produced a substantial smashed his lifetime best in the 400m hurdles clocking a time of 49.70secs breaking the 50-second barrier for the first time. David Hughes was fifth in 50.33.

In the women’s race Justine Kinney finished third in 57.40secs with Ireland’s Michelle Carey 7th in 58.77.

Gillick heads Irelands SPAR European Team Championship squad

Sunday 13th June 2010

ATHLETICS Ireland have announced a full-strength team for the 2nd European Team Championship - 1st League to be held in Budapest, Hungary, on the weekend of 19th-20th June.

The Irish team will compete in the 1st League after finishing second behind Lithuania in last year's 2nd League competition in Banska Bystrica, Slovakia.

The team for this year is at full strength especially in the sprinting events. David Gillick will be hoping to right the wrongs after a disappointing World Indoor Championship whilst, fellow Loughborough graduate Michelle Carey is part of the women’s 4x400m squad.

"The European Team Championships offers athletes a rare opportunity to compete and perform as a team which in unusual in what in largely an individual sport. We will be seeking to maintain our 1st League status against some very stiff competition. In the future, hosting such an event in Ireland will be great for the sports, the athletes and the country," said the team manager Patsy McGonagle.

LOUGHBOROUGH graduate Chris Thompson will face a tough field in the Bupa London 10,000 metres on Spring Bank Holiday Monday (31st May) around the streets of the capital.

The 29-year-old will be returning from his American training base in the running Mecca of Eugene, where representing the Nike Oregon Track Club Elite under the guidance of coach Mark Rowland his confidence will be on a real high after earlier this month clocking the third fastest track 10,000m time ever by a British male athlete with a mark of 27:29.61, and lowering his road 10k personal best time to 28:02 when finishing fourth at the Healthy Kidney race in New York City.

His performance on the track Stanford, California, has only been bettered by Jon Brown's 12-year-old record of 27:18.14 and Eamonn Martin's 27:23.06 achieved in 1988.

In the men’s race Thompson will be up against compatriot and defending champion Mo Farah and Kenya’s world record-holder over the distance Micah Kogo in the strong elite field.

Farah set the British road record of 27:50 in the event twelve months ago, whilst, Kogo, the Olympic 10,000m bronze medallist, is returning to action after missing the recent inaugural IAAF Diamond League meeting in Doha due to injuries suffered when he and two other Kenyans were involved in a car crash on their way to Nairobi airport.

The women's race looks set to be a thrilling battle between Kenya's world 10,000m gold medallist Linet Masai and the reigning world half-marathon champion Mary Keitany, who became the first ever woman to run 25km in under 1hr 20mins with a world-record time of 1:19:53 in Berlin at the beginning of May.

Masai at the age of just 20 won the world 10,000m title last August in Berlin and is the world junior record-holder for 10,000m with a 30:26.50 career best. She finished second on Sunday (23rd May) at the IAAF Diamond League meeting in Shanghai, clocking a personal best of 14:31.14 over 5,000m.

Race director Dave Bedford, expects race entrants to top 13,000 this year (last year's race had 8305 finishers), was very satisfied with his field.

"We are delighted to have such strong elite fields for our third Bupa London 10,000," Bedford said. "To have world and Olympic medallists and world record-holders on the start line alongside our British champions is a great boost for us. Their presence will add to the excitement and enjoyment for the many thousands who will follow them around this fantastic course."

The race starts on Birdcage Walk and follows an anti-clockwise route around the City of Westminster and the City of London through Trafalgar Square to the finish in The Mall.

ATHENS Paralympic gold medallist Dan Greaves (Charnwood) recorded a new World-record in the F44 discus category (57.14m) at the McCain Loughborough International on Sunday.

The 27-year-old Loughborough University graduate from Anstey in Leicestershire having previously threw a lifetime best and unofficial World-record of 56.50m at the Wexiö Indoor Throwing meeting in Växjö, Sweden in March, re-wrote the record books with a superb throw of 57.14 metres in the first round of competition - a mark that is also inside the IPC Athletics World Championships qualifying standard.

Tuesday 18th May 2010

SAMSON Oni made a winning start on his outdoor season debut with victory in the men’s high jump competition at the Meeting National de Montgeron in France on Sunday 16th May.

The 28-year-old Loughborough graduate will hope to carry forward his stellar indoor form in 2010 that witnessed the Belgrave Harrier represent Great Britain in the Doha World Championships and set a new lifetime best of 2.31m in Slovakia back in March.

In France Oni won the competition with a leap of 2.27m defeating the Ukraine’s Abdoulaye Nartov (2.24) and home athlete Abdoulaye Diarra (2.18).

Saturday 15th May 2010

GREAT Britain’s Chris Thompson finished in a strong fourth place as Ethiopia’s Gebregziabher Gebremariam broke the course record to win the UAE Healthy Kidney 10km in New York’s Central Park.

Over the undulating course the 2009 World cross country champion Gebremariam sliced six seconds off Tadese Tola’s 2009 course-record, crossing the line in a time of 27mins 42secs clear of the Kenyan duo of NYC half-marathon winner Peter Kamais (27:49) and Julius Kogo (28:19).

Chris Thompson, having produced one of the finest performances by a British distance athlete for over a decade moving to third on the UK all-time list with a mark of 27:29.61 on his track debut over 10,000m at the Payton Jordan Cardinal Invitational in California last month, the 29-year-old Loughborough graduate ran a solid race to finish fourth in 28:25 one place ahead of Ireland’s Alistair Cragg (28:33).

Report by Mark Woolley.

DAME Kelly Holmes has explained why she is returning to Loughborough College on Saturday (May 15th) to encourage Great Britain’s middle distance running stars of the future.

And the double Olympic champion, whose own career came to a glorious climax in Athens in 2004, has chosen the College’s own Commonwealth Games hopeful Charlotte Best as one of her select team of mentors.

The 24-year-old, who recently qualified for the world indoor championships in Qatar, joins Loughborough University’s Dani Christmas and six others from the ‘On Camp with Kelly’ programme to deliver a day of mentoring, education and specialised training to promising runners under 20 years of age.

Dame Kelly said: “The success of my previous mentoring programmes, such as ‘On Camp with Kelly’, also supported by Aviva, has shown the importance of providing education and mentoring to athletes through their teenage years when they are developing as athletes and also undergoing many changes away from the track.

“The ‘On Camp with Kelly’ athletes will work to offer advice and boost the confidence of the young rising stars attending the Aviva day as they progress further in their athletics careers, emulating the mentoring scheme they themselves have benefited from.”

Charlotte, a sports science student at the College, said: “I feel really honoured to be able to support and aid Dame Kelly Holmes with this mentoring and education day. It will be a great opportunity to help, encourage and inspire the next generation of athletes to follow in Dame Kelly’s footsteps, in the same way that I have sought to.”

LOUGHBOROUGH Alumni Katie Ingram won silver for Great Britain at the 2010 Nancy ETU Duathlon European Championships in France over the May Bank Holiday weekend as compatriot Kat Grimmett claimed bronze in the race won by Ruth Van der Meijden of The Netherlands following a sprint finish.

Ingram (24), from Chorley, the 2009 Commonwealth Mountain Running champion identified through the trigold talent initiative and part of the Wells Sports Foundation began training at British Triathlon’s High Performance Centre in Loughborough just six months ago and made her international debut last month at the Monterrey ITU Triathlon World Cup in Mexico.

In the race around the historic centre of Nancy in the Lorraine region of eastern France, comprising of a 10km run, 40km bike ride and a 5km run, the two British athletes were part of a breakaway group of three with Van der Meijden, that built up a minute-and-a-half lead ahead of the chasing pack during the bike leg and they maintained their advantage during the final 5k run.

THE Lloyds TSB Local Heroes is an initiative in partnership with SportsAid providing support and funding to over 270 of Britain’s most talented developing athletes on their journey to London 2012 and beyond.

In 2010 this will include Loughborough athletes Charlotte Best (800m) and Vicki Hubbard (high jump) as they target the London Olympic Games in two-years time.

Both Charlotte and Vicki have enjoyed breakthrough performances and achieved lifetime best marks this year as they qualified for their first senior major global championships representing Great Britain at the World indoors in Doha back in March.

Local Heroes was launched in 2008, with the aim of supporting promising British sporting talent on their journey to London 2012 and beyond. The programme is designed to assist young athletes across Britain with awards of £1,000 to help with the costs of training and competing at national and international level – at a time when they might need it the most.

Over the next two weeks, the ‘Local Heroes’ and their parents will attend one of five inspirational workshops across the country to ensure they not only benefit from the financial support and recognition, but also from practical advice on how to prepare for life as an elite athlete.

EIGHT Loughborough based athletes have been boosted by help from double Olympic gold medallist Dame Kelly Holmes after returning from a training camp with the 800m and 1500m champion from Athens 2004.

Charlotte Best, Jessica Burns, Dani Christmas, Kirsty Hamilton, Jordan Kinney, Carolyn Plateau, Stevie Stockton and Claire Tarplee all received support from the 'On Camp with Kelly' mentoring and education initiative for talented young middle distance athletes which has been supported by Aviva since 2004.

Some of the athletes were able to access funding from 'On Camp with Kelly' to cover their travel and accommodation costs for the trip and the programme also funded a massage therapist to travel out to Portugal so that the Loughborough athletes and the other eight 'On Camp with Kelly' athletes training in the area could access massage when they needed it.

Dame Kelly said: "An overseas training trip is a key part of an athlete's preparation for the summer season as they are able to totally focus on their training away from the distractions of home. It is important that they have access to massage treatment when they need it during this intense training period which is why 'On Camp with Kelly' and Aviva have funded a massage therapist to travel to Portugal."

Stevie Stockton, one of Loughborough University’s 2012 Sports scholars, made her senior GB debut at the IAAF World Cross Country Championships in Poland on 28th March.

She said: "The support provided by 'On Camp with Kelly' and Aviva was fantastic in Portugal. Having massage available to us 'on tap' from massage therapist Lesley Bryant has enabled me to recover from sessions well enough to get back and train the same evening or the next day. I cannot explain how valuable Lesley was to all of us and I can't thank her, 'On Camp with Kelly' and Aviva enough!"

Charlotte Best said: “Without the generous support of Aviva through ‘On Camp with Kelly’, I would not be running to my full potential, as they supported me through a career changing operation on my ankle. Also through all the ‘On Camp with Kelly’ education days I was able to prepare properly for this warm weather training trip.”

Dani Christmas added: “Warm weather training allows us to completely concentrate on our athletics and maximise our performance. Thanks to ‘On Camp with Kelly I have been able to spend two weeks in Portugal, which has been a fantastic opportunity to train hard. Having Lesley Bryant here to offer massage has been crucial to keep us all on track.”

Jess Burns said: “Being a part of the ‘On Camp with Kelly’ initiative helped provide all of us out here in Portugal with sports massage, which has been really appreciated! Thank you to both the massage therapist Lesley and Dame Kelly, as training wouldn't have gone so smoothly without their support.”

Jordan Kinney said: “I feel that the massage available from OCWK massage therapist Lesley Bryant was an invaluable part of my training in Portugal. I was able to get massage to aid my recovery for the next session and at various times when I had niggles Lesley was there to help sort them out so I was able to continue training at my optimum.

“The fact that massage from Lesley was funded through ‘On Camp With Kelly’ was brilliant and I felt with this privilege I was able to get the most out of my training and recover for each session. Lesley was brilliant and I fully appreciated her being there for the time I was in Portugal.”

Carolyn Plateau said: “Being able to go out to Alfamar, Portugal, for a two week warm weather training trip has been a great opportunity. The support from ‘On Camp with Kelly’ and Aviva is invaluable in preparation for the upcoming track season, it has been particularly useful to have OCWK's Lesley Bryant providing massage to allow us to train hard everyday.”

Claire Tarplee said: “’On Camp with Kelly’ really helped me with my warm weather training to Portugal, by financially supporting the cost of my flights and accommodation. Another great benefit was having the OCWK massage therapist, Lesley Bryant, here with us, as she was available to give massage whenever needed.”

Kirsty Hamilton said: “My two weeks training trip to the Alfamar resort in Portugal has been great, as it has allowed me to train with my Loughborough training group whilst I'm on a work placement in the South of France. I’m using this time to gain fitness and this is greatly helped by the OCWK massage therapist Lesley Bryant as she keeps all my niggles at bay during some hard training!”
