INDIA heralded the beginning of the 3rd Commonwealth youth Games with a fascinating show that vividly brought out the creativity and vibrancy of its civilisation in a most spectacular fashion.
It was a night to remember for hundreds of athletes from 71 countries and thousands of people watched as this historic city organised a party that aptly went with the spirit of "You and me from the one World, heart to heart we are one family." The opening ceremony with thousand performers did not disappoint. The Shivaji Chatrapati Sports Complex was transformed into a stage for a one-off show that was heavily contemporary as well as historical and cultural.
President Pratibha Devisingh Patil declared the games open as noted musician Pt Shiv Kumar Sharma and his son Rahul performed the rendition of the National anthem.
Hosts India, fielding the largest 154-member contingent, aspires to reap a record medal tally bettering its performance in the earlier two editions held at Edinburg in Scotland (2000) and Bendigo in Australia (2004). In Bendigo, India finished at the 10th place in the medals tally.
Abhinav Bindra, the first Indian to win an Olympic Gold in an individual event, gave inspiration to the youth in his speech to embrace sports for a fitter and healthier life after he poured the water from all 71 countries to bring alive the Fountain of Youth. The Fountain has been created by the participating countries who brought with them a sappling and water from their countries. The 17-year-old Kolhapur lad swimmer Virdhawal Khade was given the honour of being the country's flag bearer, while badminton sensation Saina Nehwal took the oath on behalf of about 1300 sportspersons who are taking part in the games.
Speaking on the occasion, the CYG Organising Committee Chairman Suresh Kalmadi, described the Pune games as the stepping stone for better medal prospects at the 2010 Commonwealth Games and the 2012 London Olympics. Expressing hope and confidence, Kalmadi said the young and budding sportspersons will certainly make the country proud in garnering a bagful of medals in Pune.
Kalmadi also thanked the Punekars and assured of a resounding success at these games. "We will be making a serious bid in hosting the 2020 Olympic Games in the country after the grand show put up in the twin games being hosted in Asia and the country for the first time," he said.
Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) president Michael Fennel, impressed by the state-of-the-art sports facilities created for the games, hoped that the young athletes will break records galore over the next six days. "The young sportspersons needs to be encouraged so as to bring love and harmony among the people of the world," he said.
Among the dignitaries who graced the opening ceremony included Maharashtra Chief Minsiter Vilasrao Deshmukh, Union Urban Development Minister Jaipal Reddy, Union Sports Minister M S Gill and most of the cabinet minister of Maharashtra.
BRITISH international Dwain Chambers came to speak to over 150 pupils and staff at Oakham School on Monday 6th October about the perils of elite sport.
Chambers has won medals on the international stage numerous times and is one of the fastest European sprinters in the history of recorded athletics. His personal best of 9.97 seconds in the 100 metres is the second fastest time by a British sprinter. He also holds the European 4x100 metres relay record with 37.73 seconds. In 1997, he set a world junior record for the 100 metres at 10.06 seconds.
However, in October 2003, he tested positive for the banned steroid THG in a drugs check, leading to the BALCO scandal. Chambers received a two-year athletics ban, and a lifetime Olympic ban. He had all of his racing accomplishments since 2002 annulled, wiping away his European record.
Since his return to athletics in 2006, Chambers has embarked on an education program to inform up and coming athletes about the pressures of elite sport, in the hope that they will not make the same mistakes as he did.
The evening was a great success with pupils gaining an insight into what life is like at the top level of sport. Pupils were able to question Dwain on any aspects of his career and he gave frank and honest answers to all the questions. He spoke eloquently and with much emotion about the consequences of his actions and pupils were left in no doubt that taking the quick route to success was definitely not to be recommended.
After the talk pupils were asked about what they thought. Some people say that he is a bad role model for young athletes, however the consensus amongst the Oakham pupils was that he was the perfect person to talk on how mistakes are made and can be avoided as he had actually experienced it. Other comments from pupils when asked what they thought included; “It was enlightening and interesting”, “It was thought provoking, it makes you realise the immense pressure these international athletes are under”, “It was inspirational I really want to aim high with my sport now”.

LOUGHBOROUGH triumphed again as the top overall team at the 2008 Leicestershire & Rutland County Primary Schools Track & Field Championships held at the Saffron Lane Stadium.
They won the year-four and year-six team championships and finished runners-up at year five to land the overall title with 193 points from runners-up Mid Leics on 174, with third-placed Hinckley on 168.
Despite the wet start to the day-long event, there were many highlights, the most significant being a championship-best performance from Matthew Cooke, of Mid Leics, in winning the year-five boys' 50 metres sprint in a record 7.3sec. As a result, he received the boys' best-performance award.
For the second consecutive year, Loughborough girls swept the board in the relays, winning at years four, five and six, clocking 60.8sec at year six to beat their winning 61.9sec of 2007. The year-six overall team championship was tight, with Loughborough finishing ahead of Mid Leics by three points.
Hinckley had some excellent results at year-five level, with Gemma Broomfield winning the girls' 75m and two runners, Sam Elliott and Joshua Clydesdale, finishing first and second respectively in the boys' 800m. In addition, their boys year-five relay team finished runners-up, which contributed to Hinckley winning the year-five overall team championship.
For the first time, the championships were supported through the Leicester-Shire & Rutland Sport competition managers. They took over after many years of organisation by George Smolinski, who has helped to make the event so well established and successful. Leading Results: Year Six

EDEN FRANCIS led the way for Leicestershire’s top junior talent as the British international claimed gold and silver at the England Athletics Open Championships (U23/U20), this combined with race-walker Fiona McGorum securing gold and middle-distance rising star Rory Fraser taking silver completed a very successful weekend at Bedford’s International Stadium.
Eden Francis competing at Under-23 level for the first time in 2008 in the colours of Birchfield Harriers, won gold in the Shot with a second-round throw of 15.51 metres to finish comfortably ahead of Huntingdon’s Chloe Edwards (14.09m).
This success followed her silver-medal performance in the Discus the previous day when she threw 52.74m to finish runner-up to Dani Samuels of Wigan (58.26m).
The 2006 AAA senior bronze medallist Fiona McGorum collect gold with a fine performance in the 5,000m race-walk in a time of 29mins 46.81secs, as the 19-year-old UWIC student successfully returned to action having recently missed a month's training with a hip injury.
The highly talented Rory Fraser representing the Leicester Owls finished second in the 5,000m behind Liverpool’s Johnny Mellor (14:11.88) in a time of 14mins 12.35secs following a very tight sprint finish. 14:11.88.
The 21-year-old county cross-country champion, just three weeks after setting a lifetime-best 13:49.02 over the distance at the BMC meeting in Manchester, having recently completed his Sports Science degree course at Leeds Metropolitan University has still to decide whether to take up the opportunity of a scholarship beginning in the Autumn at the University of New Mexico, located in the rarefied high altitude of Albuquerque, favoured training base of Britain’s world marathon record-holder Paula Radcliffe, and represent the ‘Lobos’ athletics team on the high profile NCAA circuit in America.
Rutland's Felicity Milton, the 21-year-old reigning British Universities 5,000m champion, also looking to start a US scholarship in California at Stanford, finished fourth over the distance in 17:25.64, whilst the ever-improving Loughborough student Sarah Adams was fifth in the 400m Hurdles in 63.33secs and Barwell's British junior international Nicola Robinson was sixth in the 100m Hurdles in 13.95secs.
The reigning (ESAA) English Schools champion Laura Samuel produced a stellar performance in windy conditions to set a lifetime-best of 5.90 metres to finish fourth in the Under-20 Championships in the event won by Sale's Abigail Iozuru with 6.29m.
In the Triple jump, Leicester Coritanian Tamara Longwe was fourth with 11.76m and Charnwood's Hannah Walsh finished 11th with a best of 10.63m.
2008 Leicestershire & Rutland Secondary Schools Track and Field Championships
Saffron Lane Sports Centre, Leicester
Saturday 14th June 2008
HARRY HOLLIS, the reigning England Under-17 Javelin champion was the star athlete at the 2008 Leicestershire and Rutland Secondary Schools Track and Field Championships held at the Saffron Lane Sports Centre.
The 16-year-old from Hallaton who represents Corby AC produced the top individual outright championship-best performance of the competition with a throw of 54.89 metres.
That surpassed the previous Intermediate Boys best of 52.84m achieved by Paul Starting back in 1994.
Hollis, who was competing for the Rutland area, underlined his potential back in 2006 when he won the (ESAA) English Schools Under-15 title only a couple of months after first taking up the sport and, last summer, he competed against on seven higher-ranked opponents in the England Under-17 Championships at Sheffield's Don Valley Stadium - and finished top by twice improving on his lifetime-best performance with a winning throw of 58.90m.
He followed up last September by improving his best to 63.21m.
There was also a championship-best equalling performance in the Under-13 Girls 100m from North Leicestershire's J Ragner, whose time of 13.4secs matched the time set in 1985 by North Leicestershire's Sarah Brampton.
The other championship-best performance of the day came in the Intermediate Boys relay where the North Leicestershire squad completed victory in 46.2secs to eclipse the four year old record of 46.9 set by South Leicestershire. Leading Results: Under-13 Boys

Sunday 15th June 2008
EDEN FRANCIS successfully defended her senior titles in the Shot and Discus at the 2008 Midland Senior & Under 20 Track & Field Championships held at Birmingham’s Alexander Stadium.
Despite being troubled by a painful elbow injury, the 19-year-old won the Shot competition with a throw of 15.26 metres to finish ahead of Shaftesbury Barnet Harrier Navdeep Dhaliwal (41.23) - and then completed the double gold producing a best of 44.84 to win the Discus with Rachel Wallader of Ruby (14.12) second.
The 2004 Athens Paralympic gold medallist, Dan Greaves, representing Charnwood AC ahead of this summer’s Beijing Games where the 25-year-old has been selected to defend his title in September won the Discus with a mark of 44.90m.
Leicester's British Under-23 international Somto Eruchie, now competing in the colours of Birchfield Harries, won the 200m in a time of 21.36secs and the Birmingham University medical student also claimed bronze in the 100m in 10.70.
In the middle-distance events the Owls Paul Miles was edged into the silver medal position by a margin of just seven-hundredths of a second - this following a sprint finish in the 1500m clocking a time of 3mins 55.17secs in the race won by Stroud’s Thomas Russell.
Charnwood's Clare Mensley, who clocked 4.34.07 over 1500m, Leicester's Seemita Gumbs in the 400m (55.97) and Barwell's British Under-23 international Nicki Robinson in the 100m Hurdles with a time of 14.16 to finish second to Thames Valley Harrier Phyllis Agbo (13.87) all collected silver medals.

SARAH-ANNE de KREMER, the reigning English Schools Javelin champion from Oakham in Rutland, is one of the 250 young athletes that have been selected throughout the United Kingdom as a Lloyds TSB local heroes ahead of the 2012 London Olympics and can been seen in national newspaper advertisement campaigns in the ‘Metro’ at the moment.
For every Olympic medallist, there are thousands of genuine hopefuls struggling, without recognition or funding. Those young athletes are forced to juggle intense training and competition commitments with studies and sometimes work. In many ways, this is the toughest stage of the athlete’s journey.
Lloyds TSB Local Heroes has been set up to help more of those young hopefuls - when they need it most.
Lloyds TSB, the first Official Partner of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, launched its nationwide programme on May 19th, ‘Lloyds TSB Local Heroes’. ‘Lloyds TSB Local Heroes’ will provide up to £1,000 to 250 emerging young sportspeople identified each year across Britain, in the run up to London 2012 and beyond.
By investing more than £1 million in ‘Lloyds TSB Local Heroes’ over the next five years, the bank will play a major role in supporting Great Britain’s young sporting talent. Local Heroes will be delivered in partnership with SportsAid.
Athletes receiving support through Local Heroes are already performing at a top GB or European level within their age group, but they have not yet made their ‘breakthrough’ performance into senior competition. This is a critical period in their development. Costs are significant but athletes have not yet achieved World Class lottery funding status, they do not have the profile to secure commercial interest and are still in full time education or just starting on the job ladder.
Speaking about ‘Lloyds TSB Local Heroes’, LOCOG Chairman Lord Sebastian Coe said: “This initiative is exactly the kind of support British sport needs over the next five years. These young athletes are potential Olympic and Paralympic medal winners at London 2012 and beyond and the support ‘Lloyds TSB Local Heroes’ provides to them will make a real difference to their development.”
‘Lloyds TSB Local Heroes’ is the bank’s first initiative to deliver its London 2012 vision of inspiring and supporting young people, businesses, and communities across Britain. The partnership with SportsAid aligns Lloyds TSB Local Heroes with the pathway for athlete development recognised by British sport.
In the words of Jonathan Edwards, Olympic gold medallist, World Record Holder and Lloyds TSB 2012 Ambassador: ‘Being an athlete can be a lonely life and you frequently face times of self-doubt. For someone to come in at this stage can make the difference between continuing with your dream or giving up.’
So, each year until 2012, with the help of SportsAid, Lloyds TSB will be helping to keep the dream alive for 250 young and emerging sportspeople.
They have created the Local Heroes programme because it’s a clear way to demonstrate our vision for 2012 – to inspire and support young people and communities all over Britain. Feedback from staff and customers, sports fans and non sports fans alike, made it clear they wanted to support young athletes in their local community and help them share in the excitement of Britain’s journey to 2012. Sarah-Anne de Kremer - Profile
“The first time I threw a Javelin it hit the other end of the sports hall.”
“The first thing I want to feel on competition day is nervous – nerves are good.”
“The first thing you learn is you’re going nowhere without hard work.”
“I hope my first Olympic Games will be London 2012.” What is your greatest sporting achievement, your favourite moment?
My greatest achievement was winning the English schools championships in 2006. I wasn’t ranked first in the country coming into the championships and had a personal best of 38.44m.
In the first round I threw a PB of 39.28 which put me in the lead. I stayed in first position all the way until the last round, where I was beaten into second by just 1cm! Being last in the order of throwing, I had one final attempt to get back into the lead and win my first ever national title.
I managed to react well under pressure and came out with a huge personal best of 44.27, smashing my PB before the championships by nearly 6 metres. Who is your sporting hero and why?
My sporting heroes are Dame Kelly Holmes, Steve Backley, Tessa Sanderson and Fatima Whitbread because of their spectacular achievements. If you could have a plane ticket to go anywhere in the world, where would it be and why?
I would go to Orlando, Florida and visit the beaches, water parks and theme parks. I love theme parks, especially the roller coasters. I went to Orlando in couple of years ago for a holiday and had an amazing time.
6 September 2010 – Split, Croatia - Anyone looking forward to the men’s Pole Vault competition at the beginning of the season would have salivated at the announcement of a ‘Steven Hooker vs Renaud Lavillenie’ line-up.
A sickly child Yuliya Zarudneva used to regularly catch colds and flu viruses, so in an effort to combat the problem her father came up with an interesting solution.
A towering performance by hometown girl Blanka Vlasic provided the heartbeat of an outstanding day two display by Europe as they overhauled their overnight deficit to the Americas to clinch victory in the IAAF Continental Cup.
Even though Yuliya Zarduneva had been preparing in the balmy September sunshine in Split on the Adriatic coast, she still somehow managed to catch a cold.
