UK junior record-holder Laura Samuel pays tribute to coach for success

Friday 2nd July 2010

LAURA Samuel has paid tribute to her long-term coach Glenys Morton as she prepares for the biggest test of her promising sporting life so far.

The 19-year-old triple jumper, who has just completed her two-year BTEC national diploma in sports science, is now in full training for the IAAF World Junior Championships that take place in Moncton, Canada, starting on July 19th.

And, having achieved a personal best of 13.52m in scooping the senior title with a new British junior record at the Aviva European and United Kingdom Championship trials last weekend, Laura cautiously says that she feels on course for the biggest event of all – the London Olympics in 2012.

“The world juniors will be the biggest event I have tackled so far,” she admits. “I’m ranked 7th so, if I jump to form, I should make the final – but absolutely anything could happen on the day.

“I’m delighted with how things are going at the moment and I’ve got to thank my coach Glenys Morton. She’s been with me for 10 years and there’s no way I’d be where I am now but for her.

“She was the one who advised me to take up the triple jump after years of sprinting, then trying the long jump, this, without doubt, is my best event.”

Laura, who has also qualified to represent England at the Commonwealth Games that take place in Delhi in October and is now waiting to see if she is selected, leaves College with fond memories – but is convinced that Loughborough will continue to play a major role in her career.

“The College is such a positive place with sports people everywhere. It was great to study there and then pop over the road to train at the university.

“I hope to come back to study sports management at the University one day and, Loughborough being the sporting place it is, I’m sure I’ll be around the place frequently.”

Great Britain World Junior Championships first wave of selections announced

Wednesday 23rd June 2010

UK Athletics have announced the first wave of selections for the Aviva Great Britain & NI teams to compete at the IAAF World Junior Championships in Moncton, Canada, from 19th-25th July 2010.

The women's team includes Loughborough student Sally Scott who retained her Under-20 title pole vault title at the trials in Bedford last weekend.

Despite the windy conditions the 20-year-old reigning British Universities champion coached at Loughborough by Australian Steve Rippon, secured victory with a clearance of 4.20m to take victory head of Holly Bleasdale improving on her own championship record of 4.10m set at the same venue twelve months ago.

Kevin Tyler, UKA Strategic Head of Coaching and Development and World Juniors Team Leader, said:

“We’ve named these athletes in our first round of selections based on the ‘first eligible athlete past the post in the relevant Trials’ principle, provided that they had achieved the UKA qualifying standard within the qualification period.

“We’re fortunate that we have a number of athletes who place well in the current world age group rankings and we hope that they can now focus, along with their coaches, on their preparations to do justice to those rankings in Canada.”

The second and final wave of selections, including relay teams, will be announced week commencing 5th July 2010.

Olympic and Paralympic legends launch this year’s National School Sport Week

Saturday 29th May 2010

OLYMPIC silver medallist Iwan Thomas, along with other British Olympic and Paralympic medallists, launch National School Sport Week 2010, which uses the excitement and anticipation of London 2012 to inspire young people to take part in more sport.

New research released today reveals that school children are catching Olympic fever with 81% excited about the Games and 60% already inspired to take part in more sport with almost two years to go to 2012. But despite the enthusiasm, 93% of young people have never actually tried 40% of the Olympic and Paralympic sports that will be showcased when the Games come to Britain in 2012.

50 local school children joined the athletes in London’s Regent’s Park to take part in boccia, handball, taekwondo, fencing and volleyball taster sessions ahead of National School Sport Week, which runs from 28th June to 2nd July 2010.

With nine out of ten children keen to try new sports, Lloyds TSB in partnership with Youth Sport Trust, is ensuring that National School Sport Week meets this demand by providing over four million British school children with the opportunity to do more sport in the lead up to London 2012, trying an Olympic or Paralympic sport that they have never experienced before.

The research highlights that established sports including fencing, taekwondo and triathlon suffer from a lack of awareness amongst young people and adults alike. In addition only one in ten young people have tried their hand at rowing, with only 11% having tried judo. Despite this, nine out of ten children would like to try and learn more about a new Olympic or Paralympic sport before London 2012 with 60% citing the home Olympics as an inspiration.

11,000 schools have already signed up to take part in the week’s events, which will provide over four million British school children with the opportunity to do more sport in the lead up to London 2012, and to try an Olympic or Paralympic sport that they have never experienced before.

Future Stars attend Mentoring Day with Dame Kelly

Tuesday 18th May 2010

53 young UK athletes attended a day of mentoring, education and specialised training with Dame Kelly Holmes at Loughborough College on Saturday 15th May, supported by Aviva. The aspiring Under 20 athletes earned the opportunity to attend the day, which was part of Kelly’s new ‘Future Stars with Kelly’ initiative, following either their brilliant medal winning performance at last year’s Aviva Home Country Schools Championships or selection for IAAF World Youth Championships or European Youth Olympic Festival.

As part of Aviva’s ongoing grassroots athletics sponsorship, the young athletes took part in practical training sessions, such as drills and circuit training run by Dame Kelly, as well as team building activities. They also attended specialist educational workshops on staying fit and healthy with medical experts and anti-doping within sport, delivered by the UK Anti-Doping agency. In a unique move, each athlete’s parents and coaches were also invited to attend specially tailored workshops, delivered by Next Generation Coaching and Dame Kelly herself.

Dame Kelly Holmes commented: “Through this Aviva mentoring and education day I hope to assist more talented young athletes during their journey through school, junior and senior athletics. The success of my previous mentoring programmes, such as ‘On Camp With Kelly’, also supported by Aviva, has shown the importance of providing education and mentoring to athletes through their teenage years when they are developing as athletes and also undergoing many changes away from the track. I hope this day will have provided them with additional skills and training tips to continue on the pathway to success. I wish all of the athletes taking part the best of luck at their Aviva Home Country Schools Championships and at other competitions this summer.”

Heather Smith, Head of Sponsorship & CR at Aviva commented: “Aviva has been the Number 1 sponsor of UK Athletics for over a decade. We're committed to protecting the health and wellbeing of the next generation and recognise that sport is about much more than just physical health. Participation in sporting activity helps children learn vital life skills such as teamwork, leadership, confidence, discipline and learning to win and lose. We have made it our aim to make it easier for athletes of today and tomorrow to achieve their dreams, a mission that I know Dame Kelly shares, and we’re delighted to work together to help make a difference.”

Athletes selected by Dame Kelly Holmes to mentor young athletes at Loughborough College

Tuesday 11th May 2010

EIGHT of Dame Kelly Holmes’ ‘On Camp With Kelly’ athletes have been selected by Kelly to help mentor aspiring young UK athletes, as part of Aviva’s ongoing grassroots athletics programme. Charlotte Best, Dani Christmas, Laura Finucane, Faye Fullerton, Ben Lindsay, Nikki Maddick, Andrew Osagie and Chris Smith will assist in delivering a day of mentoring, education and specialised training to promising Under 20 middle distance runners at Loughborough College on Saturday 15th May.

58 promising young athletes have been selected to attend the day based on their performance at the Aviva Home Country Schools Championships, IAAF World Youth Championships or European Youth Olympic Festival last year. The OCWK athletes will provide advice and support to these athletes as they gear up for this summer’s Championships and progress on their journeys through school, junior and senior athletics.

Nikki Maddick commented: “I am pleased to have been given this opportunity to be part of the mentoring and education day, supported by Aviva. I have been fortunate enough to have been on the ‘On Camp with Kelly’ initiative for six years. Throughout this time I have been inspired and nurtured into a dedicated and well motivated athlete with the guidance of Dame Kelly Holmes. I am hoping to pass on my expertise and experiences to athletics stars of the future, providing them with the best possible opportunities.”

Dame Kelly Holmes commented: “The success of my previous mentoring programmes, such as ‘On Camp with Kelly’, also supported by Aviva, has shown the importance of providing education and mentoring to athletes through their teenage years when they are developing as athletes and also undergoing many changes away from the track. The ‘On Camp with Kelly’ athletes will work to offer advice and boost the confidence of the young rising stars attending the Aviva day as they progress further in their athletics careers, emulating the mentoring scheme they themselves have benefited from.”

Laura leaps towards Commonwealth Games

Thursday 6th May 2010

LOUGHBOROUGH College student Laura Samuel has leapt into contention for a Commonwealth Games spot – barely 18 months after taking up the triple jump.

The 19-year-old has been put on the shortlist for selection for New Delhi in October after achieving the qualifying distance in a national junior league match in Loughborough.

And, after smashing her personal best with a jump of 13.32m which was the second best by a GB athlete in 2010, she promises there’s even more to come.

“I’m aiming to top 13.50m this year,” she said. “I know that I need to keep on performing well as I’m currently third in line for the Commonwealth Games and it’s possible we won’t take that many.”
The BTEC sports science student from Leicester is also looking to book her place in the World Junior Championships in Canada from July 16th and is hopeful of coming home with a medal.

She reveals that she owes a lot to her coach Glenys Morton who has been behind two important changes after she initially set out to be a sprinter.

“First I became a long jumper in 2007, then switched to the triple in September 2008,” she said. “I’ve taken a while to get there, but I know now this is my best event although I still use the other disciplines as preparation.”

Laura, who is due to complete her course soon, says: “At first it was difficult for me to balance my work and my sport commitments, but I have got to grips with it.

“I now plan to go on to Leicester College to do some AS-levels and then to Loughborough University to study sports management.”

‘QuadKids’ Leicestershire & Rutland County Athletics Team announced

Friday 7th May 2010

THE Leicestershire & Rutland county squad to compete at the Inter Counties QuadKids Disability event on Saturday 8th May 2010 at the Alexander Stadium in Birmingham against Warwickshire has been announced.

Samuel misses British triple jump record due to no wind gauge

Wednesday 28th April 2010

LAURA Samuel representing Birchfield Harriers missed out on breaking the existing British junior women’s triple jump record of 13.13m following a superb leap of 13.32m at the opening National Junior Athletics Premier League fixture in Loughborough on Sunday (25th April), this due to no wind gauge in operation.

On the runway of the Paula Radcliffe Track, Samuel (19), the reigning U20 English national champion, had improved her existing lifetime best of 12.98m by a huge margin surpassing the previous UK record mark of 13.13m set by Yasmine Regis (Windsor, Slough, Eton & Hounslow) in Bedford back in July 2005 and inside the qualification standard for the World Junior Championships, however, there were no wind gauges in operation at the meeting therefore invalidating any record.

Report by Mark Woolley.

Gateshead International Stadium to host opening ceremony of the Sainsbury's UK School Games

Tuesday 27th April 2010

IT has been announced that Gateshead International Stadium will be the venue for the opening ceremony of the Sainsbury's UK School Games. The event will be used to mark the official opening of the three day competition which will feature 1,600 elite school aged athletes across 10 Olympic and Paralympic sports from the 2nd-5th September.

The ceremony which takes place on the evening of the 2nd September will feature an athlete's parade along with various acts which will positively showcase the North East to athletes and spectators from outside the region. The opening ceremony forms an important focal point for the Games and in previous years distinguished guests have been involved in the ceremony, including double gold medallist swimmer Rebecca Adlington, 4x100m sprint kings Darren Campbell and Jason Gardener, GB team sprint cyclist Jamie Staff and BBC presenter Jill Douglas.

The Sainsbury's UK School Games have been devised to create an environment which replicates Olympic and Paralympic Games, so the selection of the Gateshead International Stadium proved to be the obvious choice for organisers as it mirrors the opening ceremonies at senior level in the use of the athletics venues.

Chief Executive of the Youth Sport Trust, Steve Grainger, is pleased that Gateshead International Stadium has been confirmed as the host of the opening ceremony.

He said: "Gateshead International Stadium is central to sport in North East England and it has years of experience in hosting domestic and international events so it seems very appropriate that it should host the opening ceremony and the subsequent athletics competition of the 2010 Sainsbury's UK School Games. We hope the opening ceremony provides a great showpiece for the Games, whilst also offering all the athletes an inspirational setting in which they can succeed during the competition."

Group Director for Community Based Services at Gateshead Council, David Bunce, said:

"We have ambitious plans to encourage our own school children to be more active and healthy and hosting events of this profile in our borough plays an important part. Gateshead International Stadium has a long history of sporting prestige so it is a fitting venue for our future Olympic hopefuls."

Aviva supports Schools in contributing to 2012 legacy

Friday 23rd April 2010

HUNDREDS of thousands of children are set to benefit from better athletics tuition in schools, as insurance giant Aviva has launched an ‘Elevating Athletics Fund’, pledging to provide practical training and support to every single sports teacher in the UK. With London 2012 just over two years away, leading athletics sponsor Aviva is taking action after new research revealed that over half of the UK’s PE teachers feel they need further training and better facilities to teach athletics effectively.

Backed by World Champion Heptathlete Jessica Ennis, the move is a direct response to a study conducted by Aviva, which revealed that:
52% of teachers feel they need further training to teach athletics effectively.

63% of teachers believe their schools lack the facilities to teach athletics effectively.

Two thirds of teachers admit that in the build up to London 2012, there will be more emphasis on athletics in their schools
Nine out of 10 teachers actively plan to use London 2012 to inspire children to get active and participate in sport.

93% of teachers take the view that elite sportspeople play an important role in inspiring children to get involved in sport

As part of Aviva’s long term partnership with UK Athletics (UKA) they have committed to giving every child in the UK the opportunity to get involved in athletics by 2012. Aviva’s Elevating Athletics Fund will provide support in three ways; free places on athletics teaching courses for every school in the UK (over 30,000 schools), detailed curriculum resource packs for all teachers and the chance for schools to win a £10,000 sports grant for facility upgrades. Aviva will also arrange a series of elite athlete visits to schools, to help inspire students.

In addition, the study highlighted that over half of all parents (58%) would like their child to be taught athletics over all other sports, including football. 63% of parents believe that PE classes should be treated as seriously as other academic subjects.

Jessica Ennis, World Heptathlon Champion said: “I will never forget my school PE teachers Mr Eccles and Mr Cockgreves as they gave me such great support and encouragement. It’s really important that we recognise the important role that PE teachers play in getting children involved, and continuing their interest, in sport. I’m proud to be working with Aviva to give teachers the tools they need to teach the basics of athletics in schools and hope that this will help inspire the next generation to develop a passion for athletics.”

Heather Smith, Head of Sponsorship at Aviva, commented: “Aviva has been the number one sponsor of UKA for more than a decade. Since our sponsorship began we have helped the Aviva GB&NI team prepare for all major championships and helped millions of children get involved in grassroots athletics. Continuing our long term investment into athletics at the school level we are proud to be providing practical, ‘hands on’ support to a PE teacher in every school in the UK. We hope to create a long-term legacy for the sport, unearth potential champions of the future and also make sure our investment has a continuous impact where it is needed.”

Ed Warner, Chairman of UKA, commented: “With the launch of the Aviva Elevating Athletics Fund we hope to reach out to every single PE teacher in the UK to raise standards of teaching athletics in schools. The Government’s commitment of getting two million more people into sport or physical activity by 2012 must begin in schools. Aviva have been working hand in hand with UKA for the past 10 years to get more children involved in athletics, after all, running, jumping and throwing are the foundation of all sports and this will have a long term impact. As the school summer term begins, I am delighted that Aviva is supporting UKA in our ambition of putting athletics back on the school agenda and helping to deliver on the UK’s intention to increase mass participation in sport.”
