A stunning debut by Fleckney & Kibworth Panthers & Vixens saw the south Leicestershire club sweep to a narrow victory in a keenly contested Under 11 county Sportshall championship held at Whitwick's Hermitage Leisure Centre.
After a titanic but always enjoyable and sporting battle a mere four points separated the top three teams with Ivanhoe Robins a mere two points down in second place and the same margin seeing Leicester Coritanians secure third spot. The Ivanhoe Robins B team and a mixed squad from Stilton Striders and Wreake Runners made up the field.
Fleckney & Kibworth team manager Dave Wheeler was admittedly surprised with the result, "We are new to this event as a club so much so that we had to arrange a practise session with the trainer from Sportshall Associates prior to the start, the great thing was that the boys and girls then jumped, threw and ran with fire in their bellies it was a pleasure to behold"
There is now a county training session set for Braunstone Leisure Centre next Sunday 8th November from which the selections for the squad to represent Leicestershire at the following weekends Regional Championships at Grantham will be confirmed.

EUROPEAN Athletics have announced the nominations for the 2009 European Athletics Rising Star Awards presented by Mondo, recognising the future stars of the sport in Europe of which five of Great Britain’s top junior athletes are listed.
In the men’s section European U23 champions Lloyd Gumbs (400m Hurdles) and Chris Clarke (400m) are nominated, whilst, in the women’s list the 2008 winner Steph Twell (1500m and three-time European Junior cross-country champion) is once again nominated along with European U23 gold medallist Perri Shakes-Drayton (400m hurdles) and double World Youth Games champion Jodie Williams (100m and 200m).
Voting takes place on the European Athletics website until 20th September 2009 from a shortlist including stars from this year's European Athletics U23 Championships and European Athletics Junior Championships, as well as other athletes under the age of 23 who performed exceptionally well this year.
Winners will be decided by votes from the general public, media, European Athletics Member Federations, and a panel of experts, with the results from each group of voters counting for one quarter of the athlete's final score.
The winners of the European Athletics Rising Star Awards along with the winners of the European Athlete of the Year Awards presented by Mondo will be invited to receive their awards at the European Athletics Convention in Budapest on Saturday 17th October.
Each voter must select their five preferred athletes and rank them in order of priority. Members of the public who vote will be automatically entered into a prediction competition. Entrants who have voted for the top three male and female athletes in the correct order in the poll will be entered into a draw to win a three-night trip for two to the 2010 European Athletics Championships in Barcelona, Spain. There will also be some runners-up prizes.
Speaking about the Rising Star Awards, European Athletics President Hansjörg Wirz said, “European Athletics has always focused resources on the development of the next generation of athletes.
“I think you will find a number of future Olympic and world champions on the nomination form and we look forward to seeing who will win the European Athletics Rising Star Awards for 2009.”
The nominations for the European Athletes of the Year will be released by mid September.
Last years winners of the European Athletics Rising Star awards were Stephanie Twell of Great Britain and Raphael Holzdeppe of Germany.
No athlete who has previously served a two-year doping ban can be nominated for the European Athletics Rising Star award.
THE second day of competition in the athletics programme at the 2009 UK School Games has been taking place on the track and infield of the Cardiff International Stadium. Final Team Standings: Boys

THE 2009 edition of the UK School Games begins in Roald Dahl Plass, in the heart of the picturesque Cardiff Bay, which will play host to the opening ceremony on Thursday 3rd September. The ceremony signifies the start of the multi sport event that is being hosted in six sporting locations across Cardiff, Newport and Swansea. The three cities will witness around 1,600 elite school aged athletes descend upon South Wales as they compete across 10 sport.
The opening ceremony will feature a number of GB Olympic greats and will reflect the unique culture of Wales.
As well as the entertainment element to the ceremony, the viewing public will get the opportunity to see a parade of all the 1,600 athletes a number of which will undoubtedly go on to be future Olympic and Paralympic stars if not in 2012 definitely by 2016. The UK School Games is a multi-sport event for the UK’s elite young athletes of school age.
The sports programme has been increased for 2009 to include a new sport, track cycling, which combined with the existing programme of Athletics, Badminton, Fencing, Gymnastics, Hockey, Judo, Swimming, Table Tennis and Volleyball brings the total to ten sports. The integrated programme of disability events in Athletics, Swimming and Table Tennis increases the athletes competing in 2009 to over 1500.
Each of the ten sports is combined into a four-day Games environment designed to replicate the feel of major event such as the Olympic Games, Paralympic Games and Commonwealth Games.
The UK School Games seeks to create an inspirational and motivational setting which encourages more young people to take part and succeed in sport. Responsibility for the development and organisation of the UK School Games lies with the Youth Sport Trust.
There are twelve teams competing, representing nine regions in England as well as Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales. This year will see over 450 athletes compete across a multitude of track and field disciplines. Athletics also one of the three sports which has a number of disability events.
The Athletics programme will be hosted at the Cardiff International Sports Stadium and competition will get underway on Saturday 5th September at 9.30am and will finish at 5.30pm, whilst, on Sunday 6th September it will start at 9.15am going through to 2.10pm.

GREAT Britain secured double gold in the men's and women's sprint relays to complete their most successful medal tally at a European Under-23 Championships with a collection of 18 medals.
Loughborough Sports Scholar Elaine O’Neill (Woodford Green with Essex Ladies) anchored the women’s 4x100 metres team to victory as the 19-year-old combined with Annabelle Lewis (Kingston Upon Hull), Joey Duck (Marshall Milton Keynes) and Lucy Sargent (Havering Mayesbrook) to complete a perfect set of changeovers and despite coming under intense pressure from Poland, O’Neill just held her nerve to cross the line in a time of 43.89secs.
“I didn’t know where we’d finished,” said O’Neill, “I thought we might be third.”
The men’s GB team of Ryan Scott (Yate), Toby Sandeman (Thames Valley), Rion Pierre (Windsor, Slough, Eton & Hounslow) and Leevan Yearwood (Victoria Park & Tower Hamlets) underlined their position as favourites to take gold in 39.09secs ahead of France and Poland.
UK champion Alex Smith (Sale Harriers Manchester), eleventh ranked going into the Hammer final, finished seventh with a series-best effort of 68.75m in the third round, achieving his top eight target, whilst, fellow Loughborough athlete Robbie Grabarz (Bedford & County) finished 11th in the High Jump competition.
"What a fantastic performance by the team," said GB team leader John Trower. "It's been fantastic from the first day and the team has excelled in all areas - on the track and on field - what a brilliant all round team performance.
"Three years out from London you've got to say there are probably half a dozen athletes who could step up to getting into finals there and that's exceptional - what a fantastic Championships."
EMILY PIDGEON claimed a hard fought bronze medal for Great Britain in the 5,000m on the final day of competition at the 2009 European Under-23 Championships in Kaunas, Lithuania, as Russia’s impressive Natalya Popkova secured double gold following her victory over 10,000m on Friday night (17th July).
In a highly competitive race Popkova pulled away from the field with 600m to cross the line in a time of 15mins 54.11secs to take victory as Belarus' Sviatlana Kudzelich dug deep to overtake Loughborough student Pidgeon, the 2005 European junior 5,000m champion, with just 20 metres to go to claim silver.
The field was taken through the opening kilometre by Germany’s Cornelia Schwennen in 3:19.24, this following an 82:56 opening lap as Popkova was already in contention alongside the 10,000m bronze medallist Azra Eminovic of Serbia.
With six laps to go a group of nine had broken away led by Popovic and Eminovic as the group passed 3km in 9:45.30 Pidgeon moved through as Popkova continued to force the pace.
As the race moved into the final two-laps the title chase was down to three athletes as Popkova, Kudzelich and Pidgeon were together before with 600m to go Popkova made her move and immediately opened up a significant gap leaving Pidgeon and Kudzelich to battle for the minor medals. The bell was reached in 14:47 with the Russian in a comfortable 30 metre lead and the race and championships double was won. Kudzelich clocked 16:03.85 with Pidgeon recording a season’s best of 16:04.71.

Aikines-Aryeetey is now the only British athlete in history to have won gold medals at youth, junior and under-23 major championship level.
Aikines-Aryeetey commented: "That was the toughest start of my life. I just ran as hard as I could. The start was so poor it was unreal.
"Luckily enough I came through - a one-two-three - that's amazing. It shows the strength and depth we have in sprints at all levels. We're all just happy to be in the mix and all happy to win a medal."
Yearwood clocked 10.26secs, as Pierre set a new personal best of 10.28 to take bronze.

In the men’s 100 metres former world junior champion Harry Aikines-Aryeetey progressed through as the fastest qualifier for the final after clocking 10.32secs (-1.3).
"That was alright," said Aikines-Aryeetey. "It was a bit nerve-wracking being out there for the first time, but it was good to be back, it's a good track, they've re-laid it and it feels fast."
In the hurdles Meghan Beesley (Birchfield Harriers), the 19-year-old World Junior bronze medallist, was first off in heat one to win comfortably in 57.91secs and is confident she has a lot more to give as the championships progress.

THE second annual "Magic Miles" promoted by Fleckney & Kibworth Running Club took place on Wednesday 1st July in hot and sultry conditions at Fleckney recreation ground.
The race evening was again forming the centrepiece of the week long "Fleckneyfest" and thus was highly slanted towards athletes young and not so young within the local communities rather than going down the open invitation basis. This in no way detracted from the quality on display however as the area has long been synominous with a production line of talented runners.
In the primary school age group there was a titantic battle between Elise Tear of Kibworth and Teagan Allen of Fleckney which was finally decided within the last 100 metres as the in form Tear powered home in 6:49 with long time leader Allen in 6:51, third place was filled by debutant and new recruit Grace Grimmett in 7:49.
The corresponding primary school boys race featured a repeat victory for Josh Knight, the Leicester City academy starlet posting 6:12 followed in close order by Bryn Williams in 6:15 before a gap to Oscar Trier in 06:29. Taking an impressive fourth place was Leicestershire Schools cross country champion at Year 3 Harry Allen who returned 6:33 and who was conceding two and even three years to some of his peers
In the following combined boys & girls school year 7 and 8 race there was an impressive 5:50 winning time for rising year 7 prospect Dan Belton who had a margin of eight seconds on Inter Counties cross country representative and recent winner of the Arnesby junior cross country event Luke Mathers in 5:58, stopping the clock on exactly 6:00 was the fast finishing Jack Williams. In the girls section Ella Voss was another repeat winner in 7:10 from Shaskia Sneath in 7:39.
The senior ladies race was captured by triathlete Rachael Campbell in 6:24 followed by defending champion Lorna Waters in 6:32 and Anne Ghillespy in 8:19.
The senior men's mile atracted an interesting and mixed field with defending champion Stefan Ashman ranged against familiar opposition from the 2008 race including Leicester Running Shop proprietor Rob Pullen as well as ex Leicester City hero Muzzy Izzet and Leicester Tigers Guinness Premiership Coach of The Year Richard whose wife Sarah and son Stan are both club members. One athlete who pushed Ashman hard last year Karl Beardall who has risen to 4th in the overall LRRL winter rankings this campaign but was missing this year due to a persistant linjury issue. This left Ashman with the task of cutting out all of his own pace as the sweltering conditions showed little sign of abating.
Keen to better his winning time of 5:16 in the 2008 race Ashman timed it to perfection to stop the clock at 5:15 and will be content after familiarising himself with Fleckney's seasonal track in recent weeks.
The evening's grand finale was yet to come howver as athletes and sporting celebrities were wheeled out again for the traditiional closing event the 4 x 400 metres relay which saw a Fleckney & Kibworth ladies squad augmented by The Leicestershire AAA Ladies 100 and 200 metres champion Hannah Ingram take on a "Young Guns" squad of Ashman, Luke Mathers, Chris Parkes Bowen and Jack Williams as well a Fleckney men's team of Izzet, Cockerill, club captain Stacey Voss and John Redfearn pitched against defending champions Kibworth who included Pullen as well another Leicester City legend in Steve Welsh who was a surprise bonus guest when he arrived with Izzet and then the squad completed by Vince Brown and Ant Grimmett.
The story of the race was a run away revenge victory for Fleckney with Cockerill putting in a powerful opening leg which was more than consolidated by Redfearn and Voss. This left Izzet to round off victory in a total time of 4:32 and show all present that he is more than ready to make his debut for Leicester City Masters in their forthcoming closed season tournaments. At the following prize giving race director and head coach of Fleckney & Kibworth Dave Wheeler used the occasion to deliver a withering attack on education authorities at national level who he deemed had "turned their back on tried and methods"
Expanding on what he saw as the juxta position of progressive athletics and running clubs as opposed to the UK schools authorities he bemoaned the failure to build on the golden generations that produced names such as Ovett, Coe, Gunnell and Thompson and had seen instead the misguided preoccupation with participation over competition which had left quality marginalised.
He continued "This said of course participation and access to all is vitally important in terms of raising the overall national level of health and fighting the obesity epidemic , likewise it would be folly to overlook the selfless sacrifice of local teachers who willingly give of their own time trying their level best to do the "right thing."
However the overall drift coming down from central government has been to the detriment of nuturing elite talent and by not pushing the boundaries of competiive sport equates to turning one's back to the tried and trusted methods that made us a powehouse in global track & field"
